EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Juakali Workforce increases the visibility, credibility of young men and women working in the informal sector through the use of information technology and the provision of advanced craft trainings in order to facilitate social mobility within their communities. Juakali Workforce targets urban out of school youth who operate at the fringe of the Kenyan economy. Most of these youth have basic technical skills and crafts that they employ in the informal sector; they typically have a low-level education, limited knowledge of technology, and poor business skills. These factors limit the market they have access to and their opportunities to grow economically. Through the online platform, workers in the informal sector who have skills in cleaning, masonry, carpentry, electronics, cooking, plumbing and welding are provided with market access to customers. The Juakali service uses existing technologies of mobile phones, SMS and the internet to connect two groups of people- the out of school youth and the growing middle class in an innovative way. These connections are allowed to happen in a trusted space, the online platform, where both groups can mutually benefit. Consistent interaction on the online platform will lead to the creation of a database of workers whose work is easy to track. The youth on the other hand will be able to build a reference system, which will help them be more credible and find more opportunities.

WHO BENEFITS?

Juakali Workforce offers the power of the web to mobile phone owners through SMS and mobile applications, connecting the youth working in working in the informal sector like cleaners, welders, mechanics, electricians, carpenters, fumigators etc. to clients in the rapidly growing middle class in urban areas in Kenya.

  • Kenya

EXPERIENCE IN IMPLEMENTATION COUNTRY(IES)

  • Yes, for more than one year.

EXPERTISE IN SECTOR

  • I’ve worked in a sector related to my idea for over a year

Juakali Workforce received training support from the GrowthAfrica, a startup accelerator based in Nairobi. A pilot for the Juakali service was conducted between the months of January and July 2015. During the duration of that period we registered 100 workers on the service, increased our social media reach to over 1000 likes and placed 20 workers. We are looking to increase our reach and impact in the coming year.

Any reason why there is no link to the online platform?
All the best and hopefully see you in the next round.
