New television series on the UK’s Channel 4 around finding people’s ‘hidden potential’. They put ordinary people through a series of diverse tests around physical, mental, sensory and creative skills, in order to discover unknown aptitudes (not just testing traditional school knowledge). In this weeks’ show, the series finale, a young man discovered he had unusually strong capability for language and was then set the challenge of learning Arabic fluently over a 19-week period. Another young woman discovered she was unusually apt at navigation and spatial awareness. Both are now working in fields related to these previously unknown aptitudes—both appeared to be feeling significantly more confident, too!

Wouldn’t it be powerful if we were all ‘tested’ in less traditional aptitudes and helped to discover our hidden inclinations and capabilities earlier in life?

To me this makes me think that sometimes the talent is not so hidden as it may appear. Sometimes people are conscious about what their assets are ... and it is the recruiting space that is blind for certain type of talent. I've heard recruiters say 'we tried MBAs people, but it did not work out, so now we are looking for another profile'. And what they be missing is that what they need is not strictly related to MBAs qualifications and instead may have to do with a type of talent that some MBAs may have and some non-MBAs may also have, being the MBA qualification the wrong glass to look through. Miopia in the recruiting space makes the gap grow.
