Skills & Training

Help us identify new types of ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ skills that today’s young people might need to succeed in the workplace, and the ways in which they’re being acquired.

As new sectors and technologies emerge, there’s also a need to develop skills beyond those traditionally taught within formal education and training. What are some skills – soft and hard – you have encountered that you think are important for young people to acquire in order to succeed in the workplace?

New training and learning models are also emerging that help people to acquire and sharpen their skills outside of their formal education. We’d love you to share any examples you’ve seen of new and inspiring ways to develop soft or hard skills that are happening beyond the classroom.

In today's business world is no longer a benefit, but almost a necessity to have multilingual employees. Our world, and today's business world in particular is in the midst of globalizing and we need to catch up.

Corporate rotational programmes acclimate junior and senior leaders. These programmes initially afford breadth, with the goal of later focusing individuals toward depth. This same concept is being applied to young people in School-To-Work programs.

A while back, we had the son of a manager visiting our office for a week, to experience the life in a workplace. This week was an integrated part of his education. Obviously, we created a nice program for him, so he got to see many facets.

Almost all jobs are project-based. So why do we teach students to take tests? Education should be project based which will teach both soft and hard skills. Studio School is a great example of this

Teaching young people technical skills can be a challenge, but even more daunting is transforming their habits and behaviors to meet the needs of today's companies. Can professionalism be taught? Year Up thinks so.

A new mindset demands new skills from schools. That's the purpose of Escola da Ponte, in Portugal. Students there are not divided in classes but in dynamic groups, and they choose what to study having as the main criteria, what they want to learn.

Underrated soft skill: being able to pick what you want to do and tell a convincing story about how you chose. Paralysis of indecision can be a much greater risk than making the wrong decision.

In the US we are in a glut of doctors and programmers. One path is a long, hard road resulting in people depending on you for their lives, but the other is a short, soft path where you can almost immediately be helpful.
