Skills & Training

Help us identify new types of ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ skills that today’s young people might need to succeed in the workplace, and the ways in which they’re being acquired.

As new sectors and technologies emerge, there’s also a need to develop skills beyond those traditionally taught within formal education and training. What are some skills – soft and hard – you have encountered that you think are important for young people to acquire in order to succeed in the workplace?

New training and learning models are also emerging that help people to acquire and sharpen their skills outside of their formal education. We’d love you to share any examples you’ve seen of new and inspiring ways to develop soft or hard skills that are happening beyond the classroom.

Introducing young adults and children at early ages to communities of makers and self-learning will empower new generations to realize that when there isn't a job available, they can make one themselves.

There's a fantastic scheme in the UK which matches up school leavers with organisations for a 'year in industry' before they go to university.

It's often only when we get derailed do we realise that we've been sitting on the wrong train. A successful job hunt in 2012 requires us find our perfect match. To do this we need to first understand and then communicate our unique brand properties.

To know that one is not alone, and that there are steps to help one forge a path into a career that is meaningful is helpful. One can build up expertise in an area of interest even when not on the job. This is helpful tool to show you how.

Youth need to look within themselves and what really moves them. Their passions, their loves and most importantly their own self-belief. They need a strong conviction of their core values, belief in their own abilities and passion for their field.

Being multilingual is key in today's global world and can become a competitive advantage. Yet language instruction is not always very efficient in schools, and even after several years of classes, many students can still not speak a foreign language.
