Hurdles & Success Stories

Share your story, or someone else’s, about the hurdles you faced and/or the successes you achieved when you first entered the workforce, or made another big life transition.

Personal experiences can serve as the best kind of inspiration for new ideas. We’d love to hear your story of transitioning from education to employment but also stories about other big life changes you’ve been through. So whether it was leaving school and starting work, leaving home, moving abroad or starting a family, tell us what was daunting, what was exciting, who helped you prepare, what actually happened and what you learned from it all?

You could even venture further and interview someone you know about their experience of a big life change.

Personal experience is a powerful learning tool. Through each job and activity, kids learn about how society functions, financial literacy, adult professions, team work, independence, self-esteem and real-life skills.

My multi-cultural, multi-faceted, multi-inspirational upbringing means I often find myself occupying the space in between things: collaborating, connecting, merging, questioning - but also a difficult space to own without the right support.

We the student chapter of OpenIDEO at NYU-Poly had our meeting yesterday and we were able to come up with questions for an interview for the current challenge. We plan on sending it out to students/employers and a few other people soon. Enjoy!

What if you could work in the field you are studying in and graduate debt free? It exists in a little college in the Ozarks.

When I graduated I realised that just sending out CVs and covering letters was not going to cut it in this job market. I think that we should be encouraging youth to be a bit more creative in their job hunt, both from a school level, aswell as uni.

Last September, for the Amnesty unlawful detention challenge, I wrote about feeling powerless in my unsuccessful job search. Now I'm gainfully employed and it seems like everyone is looking for talented new people. Where is the disconnect?

In a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can be difficult to be an introvert. But, as Susan Cain argues, introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world, and should be encouraged and celebrated.

Through various personal and professional experiences I have learned that students can benefit the most while in school through various programs available through the school itself. Internships programs are the best to get your foot in the door.

I moved thousands of miles away to a city I knew very little about, where I didn't know a soul, without a place to live. It was thrilling.
