Curriculum Mashup

Mashup of already available free web courses to provide a curriculum to become for example a web entrepreneur.

During the last years the world has seen the rise of many new platforms providing free courses on the web. Based on my personal experience the quality is very high, but courses are still a bit scattered. The student has to figure out by himself what courses might be useful, and no-one's offering a full curriculum yet. For example Web Application Engineering would have been much easier had I already known some html.

This issue could be easily solved by a curriculum mashup: a website combining the courses offered by separate organizations to meaningful packages. Curriculum to become a Web Entrepreneur might look something like this:

During these courses the student would learn the basics of programming web applications, learn about user needs, build and test prototypes and turn the prototype to a real application. There should also be some more courses on how to run the business, but for now I only managed to find one course on growth.

Further possibilities include adding gamification elements to make progress trough the curriculum more fun and integration to OpenIDEO challenges: OpenIDEO could provide the themes for Human Computer Interaction course. As a result the course would feel more meaningful, and impact of OpenIDEO would be increased, if even some of the prototypes would turn to real companies.

How will your concept support young people as they transition into the world of work?

Free curriculum of online courses provides the necessary skills to become a web entrepreneur.

What online or in-person components of your concept will best support this transition?

The concept obviously relies fully on the offerings of web education organizations.

I came to OpenIDEO to see if anyone else had this idea. Glad to see I am not the only one. I think this should have been one of the finalists for this challenge. To me it seem clear that if there was some organization that compiled all the free educational opportunities out there and organized them in meaningful ways, that they would result in massively leveraging the existing free educational opportunities and be a catalyst to creating new free online educational opportunities.
