Employability career talks and workshops

We agree, OpenIDEO Barcelona: "Passion is contagious"! TED talks are for us one example of passionate people inspiring others by talking about what they do and what they believe in.What if we used this energy and passion to motivate young people to build a successful future for themselves? The idea is very simple: a series of TED-like talks organised locally by volunteers and presented by people who are passionate about what they do. Each speaker would be required to tell their career story and prepare an exercise that illustrates the kind of work they do, a bit like a tiny workshop. These could be recorded and posted online so they are widely available. What if TED speakers were invited to hold a session with a young audience?

It would be very easy to set up small groups, this is already done with meetups all over the world.

What are the next steps for implementing this idea?

Update from Houda

As we started looking into prototyping this idea, we were lucky to get in touch with Leonard Cheshire Disability. An organisation that aims to help young people with disability. They are particularly interested in improving employment opportunities, and were planning a TED-style workshop co-designed and led by inspiring youth.

Since we were thinking along the same lines, we have decided to work together to prototype the workshops. We are excited to be able to access LCD's deep insight into the problems and experiences of disabled youth. We all agreed that , although an engaging talk would be inspiring, we need to push these youth to action and give them the confidence to take it to the real world.

We are now working on the workshop design. As we started late during the challenge, we are still running behind the online platform but we will keep at it and let you know what happens :)

Complete a User Experience Map. This will help you visualize how a potential end user will interact with your idea. Once you have completed it, upload it using the Upload File button at the end of this form. PDF files preferred.

  • Still working on it

Who does this idea benefit, who are the main players and what's in it for them?

Young people 16-24 with a disability

How is your idea specifically increasing access to employment opportunities and pathways for young people?

This idea aims to
1. provide inspiration to young people through exposure to successful, passionate professionals
2. Give ian idea about what a particular job would entail and whether it is someothing they would enjoy/be good at
3. Provide opportunities to network and build connections

What early, lightweight experiment can you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Arrange a small session with a group of 22-24 year old individuals and professionals.

What skills, input or guidance are you keen to receive from the OpenIDEO community to help you build out or refine your idea further?

Ideas, feedback, thoughts, hellos ..all welcome :)

The idea emerged from:

  • An OpenIDEO Meetup

How do you envision your idea being implemented?

  • Keen to prototype it, find partners and pursue implementation

Great idea!! We could imagine that these TED-like talks can be a really good way to reach our target group for "One day..." https://openideo.com/challenge/youth-employment-pathways/ideas/one-day

Would be a very attractive platform for both young people and speakers!

Schools could give their students (e.g. those who need to make career choices that year) the assignment to organise such an event. That would "force" them to think about who they would like to get on the stage, find them through their networks (finding out how big their network can be already) and talk with them about their work and how they got there etc.

Great point about letting students organise such an event. Identifying the people they want and can learn from and initiating connections is an important skill in itself. Thanks guys! Looking forward to the next step for "One day"!

Sounds a lot like the TEDx model. Great inspiration, London! Exciting to see the collaboration between your meetups
