The role of community norms

Reading about the rape case in India and specifically the comments made by the victim's lawyer saying that it was partly the girl's fault that she was out late at night with a man who was just her boyfriend and therefore she had put herself in a dangerous situation, it highlights the fact that the community plays a huge role in ensuring the safety of girls and women and allowing violence towards girls and women. By engaging the community, identifying and tackling some of the cultural and social norms associated with violence and the relationship between those and the perception of what a girl should or should not do, we might be able to shift the responsibility from the victim to the perpetrator.
