The Power of Subtle Humour
Letting someone know they are using language or actions that are problematic can be hard to do, especially in a social setting. Humour can help.
One night a friend was discussing her work, which can sometimes involve detailed explanations of feminine hygiene. A male in the group made a disgusted face, to which she quickly responded with "oh you can handle it, you're a big boy."
He immediately recuperated and said "yah, you're right," which allowed us to have a great talk and didn't embarass him by getting too serious. Hopefully he left a little more confident in his ability to handle a topic which, although foreign to him at this point, is an every day occurence for a large part of the world.
This post is a result of a discussion had by the Berlin OpenIDEOers group / March 2014.
