"Text me when you arrive home"

After a fun evening, how many of you have been asked by friends or parents to text them when you arrive home? What do you think are the reasons behind this habit and how might we learn from people's existing behaviors?

Why would a parent, a boyfriend or girl friend would ask you to 'Text when you arrive home'? I have encountered this many times in ─░stanbul, New Delhi and Kampala - what could be the reasons behind this habit and how might we learn from people's existing behaviors?

Have you experienced this in other parts of the world?

Sorry for reviving this after a year.

This is really a good way to let your friends or loved ones know that you've arrived to your final destination safely. But, how about the opposite? It is usually done after the fact. Could there be a better way to let them know that you're in trouble or you're needing help.
