SOS railway cards offer women railway commuters helpline information

The authorities of North Central Railway in India are distributing 'Nirbhaya cards' to women passengers commuting from various locations in the North to Delhi. These cards have phone numbers of station heads of various centres of the region along with control room number and aimed to provide women with information that can help them have a safe journey. While the sucess of this recently implemented initiative is yet to be tested, the initial reaction of commuters was positive. Having ready access to a helpline is one step further to making woman feel more secure.

This initiative gives a positive message to women commuters that help is available to them. The learning here is that sometimes having access to information and support can build courage and confidence. However, I am curious to explore how responsive and effective the emergency helpline is when a commuter does call?
