Men can stop rape - a peer to peer program

A program in the US http://www.mencanstoprape.org/, mobilises men to come together to fight against rape. From education programs, awareness campaigns to training programs; they engage and train men within the community to reach out to other men. They sensitise men to empathise with women, and also to understand deep seated gender stereotypes and causes of sexual violence. They take a preventive measures against rape, by promoting healthy concepts of masculinity and encouraging men to take responsibility, as well.

I believe sexual violence against women is deep seated in cultural and social dynamics that are enhanced in low income areas in India - where many of these crimes are committed by illiterate men. To address these issues at their root, I am keen to explore ideas that change the mindset through education.  This example interests me because in this case men are working with men. Can men against sexual violence stand up as facilitators and role models in ther communities - to spread awareness and education within their localities?

Great provocation, Sonali. I also like the different, though aligned, inspiration: http://www.openideo.com/challenge/womens-safety/research/the-moral-bro-code-community – which touches on involving men in an aspirational way. We're excited for folks here to think about how we might incentives and motivate men to get involved as we approach our upcoming Ideas phase. Hope to see you there!
