Girl Rising: Life in Kolkata's Informal Urban Settlements

Girl Rising is a feature film from 2013 that tells the true stories of nine girls from around the world, each of whom has faced incredible obstacles in gaining an education. In the video below, one of the film's writers, Sooni Taraporevala, shares her experience meeting Ruksana, a young girl who lives with her family in an informal settlement in Kolkata, India. Sooni is also from India. In the video she shares her observations on the challenges facing families like Ruksana's and reflects on their incredible resilience.

For families like Ruksana's, I wonder how we can make the home environment safer, knowing that informal settlements are often impermanent.

What kinds of infrastructure enhancements can we make to informal urban settlements that improve safety but can be trasferred to a new location when the neighborhood's population is forced to relocate?

Perhaps a number designating the relative safety of an area for women would be useful to post on a centrally located blackboard daily...
