Through a curriculum of games designed to teach life skills (like the one above) the organization is working with 250,000 children across India’s slums and villages through a vast network of volunteer youth leaders.

I love Magic Bus’ approach because it is rooted in joy and positivity. It’s also a great example of engaging boys in creating a more gender-friendly and empowering environment for girls.

What other games and sports-based organizations are having an impact on empowering girls in low-income urban areas? I know Grassroots Soccer is one in Africa. What would help take these types of programs to the next level?

Shauna, what would help take these types of programs to the next level include:
1. Making sure that women can use public spaces as freely as men do -- including places like buses, bus stands, walkways -- places women avoid after office hours!
2. Making sure there are enough role models of liberated women available in your own locality!
