Combating Violence Against Girls and Young Women in the Great Lakes Region of Africa

A project focusing on women's violence in the great lakes region in Africa works with women to protect their physical and psychological integrity. They work through multiple avenues to achieve this including policy changes, access to resources (health, legal, psychosocial, and socio-economic reinsertion), and a program that involves and educates men. The project is in its fourth year and intends to carry on through 2017. http://www.ceci.ca/en/where-we-work/africa/rwanda-burundi-democratic-republic-of-congo/projects/project-to-combat-violence-against-girls-and-women-in-the-great-lakes-region/

What I find interesting about these efforts is the male involvement and how their involvement and influence will be long lived through self-initiated awareness groups. Changing men's paradigm of the view of women and having men educate men is a strong avenue towards change.

Great initiative, Kyle! It reminds me of another post that also highlights the importance of men's involvement and shared responsibility of this issue: http://openideo.com/challenge/womens-safety/research/it-s-a-men-s-issue-and-a-peer-group-issue. You can try using the 'Build On This' feature to link your submission to others that share similar themes, if you like. Look forward to learning from more of your contributions!

Tip: you can update your post at any time by hitting the Update Entry button up there on the right. To activate Build Upon items... scroll down to the Build Upon area of your submission form and search for the post Jamie mentions there. Drag it across as per the instructions and hit Save.

When you link to other's posts using Build Upon, people whose contributions you've built upon will get an email notification and are likely to come and join the brilliant conversation you've started here as well. Creativity loves company, right? :^)

Great share of an initiative including men, Kyle. We're also excited to note that improving access to information about legal rights is included. Looking forward to seeing more of you across this challenge...
