Anti-Rape Underwear

Anti-rape underwear that can help women resist an attempted assault. Other tools of self-defense currently available are not effective in many common settings given that they require that the potential victim be very alert and might be taken away to use against her. Resistance increases the chance of avoiding a completed rape without making the victim more likely to be physically injured. Anti-rape underwear is an item of clothing that creates an effective barrier layer can allow women and girls to passively resist an attacker, in addition to any other form of resistance they may be able to carry out at the time of an assault. I think the most interesting thing about this product for the OpenIDEO community to learn about may be the backlash against it.  Many have suggested that it supports a blame the victim mentality.  Read here for criticisms: http://pando.com/2013/11/01/high-tech-anti-rape-panties-are-pissing-people-off-despite-best-intentions/

Hello Rachel,
This product is a great idea. I read about the product and I found interesting the ability to lock the waist band to prevent removal, but how would you stop a rapist from just cutting it off? Since this challenge is about women in low-urban communities how do you think these women are able to afford this product? And how much impact would it have in them feeling safer?
