12 Initiatives Working to Empower Women in the Middle East
Due to harsh inequalities and gender discrimination in the Middle East, women only make up a quarter of the workforce. Because of these factors, female empowerment in the Middle East is a very hot topic and something to be explored.
In honor of the Women Powering Work: Innovations for Economic Equality in MENA competition, Leena AlOaimy put together a list of twelve intiative working hard to improve female empowerment. There are initiatives for everything from the Roudha Center and Ruwwad which serve to teach women basic business skills and how to embark on their own entrepreneurial endeavors, to Trochet and Artistry Egypt which use employee women from low-income areas to make things from recycled or eco-friendly textiles for profit.
These initiatives all seem to provide a very necessary service or industry for women in the Middle East to further attempot to squash gender discrimination and inequality. It would be interesting to see if they have similar counterparts in other low-income and gender inequal parts of the world.
