Rate and label unsafe places

It would be helpful if you can warn others from a place where you encountered fear, "feeling unsafe" or a bad situation. So I would suggest an "area rate button" in maps applications to help other to find a saver way home. And to concentrate the ratings on a internet platform to give helping organizations and the police a orientation where they need to look at. Even the companies in the neighborhood would encounter stress if there area is bad rated. So they a more likely to do something against it. Build better lights, clean the area, play classical music or anything else.

The first line of this idea is some kind of a button you can use to rate a area as dangerous. If a number of different people do this in the same timeframe we can assume that this specific area is some kind of frightening to people.

With this knowledge we open a ticket on a platform which manages the unsafe places. If the ticket is open, some people (enthusiasts like in wikipedia for example) do research on this area. And try to get some stories. Maybe from the persons who have rated the area as dangerous or some volunteers. (This can be done somehow automated)

If the area is really dangerous, we label this in a maps application. With the time the problem solves itself or volunteers (victims) try to change the situation. For exapmle using the ratings and stories to prove the danger to others. (Like male police officers etc. )

Explain your idea in one sentence.

Label and rate unsafe places to use the information as a pressure point to local governments and companies.

What is the need you are trying to solve?

Find dangerous places. Inform woman (and man) to avoid these places. To encourage to do something against this dangerous places. And to give the police more information about the hotspots in there area.

Who will benefit from this idea and how would you monitor its success?

You can monitor the using rate of the apps to prove usage. And some kind of wiki with a ticket system. Where enthusiasts follow up the development of dangerous areas with a ticket system and inform local entities about the problem. You can monitor the success rate of changing the area to a better. Woman, local administration and companies would benefit, because of the feedback they get on how safe there neighborhood is.

Who would be best equipped to implement this idea in the real world? You? Your organisation? Another organisation or entity?

Some sort of NGO with strong ties to IT companies. Maybe something like wikimedia.

Where should this idea be implemented?

As an extension for maps application in areas of high population density and with at least a minimum of internet coverage.

How might you prototype this idea and test some of the assumptions behind it?

Assumption number one: People would like to rate unsafe places. => Start in a sample area. And advertise it. If there is a feedback in form of registrations and ratings it could work. two: Map provider would implement a rating button. => Ask IT companies if this would be possible. tree: people need to get that it is about safety, not about like or dislike. => Try it in a sample area? And ask (test) people how they react on something like this. four: A NGO or company would support this => Ask UK Aid or Amnesty? five: Some money needs to be raised to run the infrastructure => Ask for help?

We have a similar idea! We plan to combine a mobile app, a website and an offline solution for rating transit facilities based on how safe they are. Do check it out:
We'd love to hear what you think.
