Safe Woman System

The Women transiting risk areas will receive a control capable of running very simple and very effective security system. We first will Identify areas with greatest danger, we will choose the lamppost closest to these areas and we will install this system on the lampposts. The system has a siren capable of producing a loud warning signal, a light and a simple cellphone. When pressing "Warning" colorful street light is lit and an SMS message is sent to a central monitoring station, which can be the police themselves or the community. When tightening the sign "Emergency" The siren goes off, the lights flash, an SMS message is sent to the police, to the monitoring station and to the people live next to the lamppost.

Explain your idea in one sentence.

Security system for the woman who allows women in distress alert neighbors and police.

What is the need you are trying to solve?

We are solving the problem of women's safety.

Who will benefit from this idea and how would you monitor its success?

Women who are exposed to situations of insecurity in regions of low development would be benefited. We could choose a test group of 10 women and 3 risk places to test whether the solution works and monitors the results.

Who would be best equipped to implement this idea in the real world? You? Your organisation? Another organisation or entity?

Here in my city, we have a Hackerspace. I think the people from that place can make and test with me this solution.

Where should this idea be implemented?

In my city, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We have this problem here and we have a good network of partners and women's groups to help with testing.

How might you prototype this idea and test some of the assumptions behind it?

I can create a test application with just the basic functions, select a group of women to use for 20 days, harvesting the results with everyone involved and develop a more complete application.

Given your interest in mobile solutions, we thought you might also be keen to collaborate on this idea: http://www.openideo.com/challenge/womens-safety/ideas/safings-groups

Hi Luiz,

I like that you are thinking about an alarm system at the street level, about ways to help distressed women who may not have access to cell phones themselves, and about creating a community or system of support (via the police or people next to the street light). I also agree that creating noise and shedding light on a dangerous situation is good.

However, I am curious about how accessible the lamppost kit would be. I imagine that security could be an issue for the kit itself, especially if it contains a cell phone. How could one ensure that the kit wouldn't be stolen? Or even set off as a prank? How could one be likewise sure that women would know how to locate a kit and use it while also keeping those who mean harm from obstructing the kit's use?

Might there be a way to design this type of urban alarm system that might have less ways of being subverted?

Very interesting your settings . I thought on lamppost just for the kit stand taller and protected from attacks. The cell used was very simple , it could even be of different technologies that are no longer marketed for exemple GSM . The components would put the in a box , not allowing people to see that inside is a cell . A communication campaign for the community to stay alert to the protection of this system could inhibit the action of bad people . However , I believe we can think better in simpler tools and solutions that do not carry this type of problem. At this time we are contributing with ideas we can build better ideas together. This idea carries the concept that women would be safer if they could call for help when they were threatened and this request for help would be heard by this system . We can think of alternative ways of ensuring that the distress of women are heard ... together we can improve this idea !
