International Piecework Network
A contributing factor to urban crime, and violence against women is income. Low or no income locks women into areas with low preforming school, poor personal relationships, crime and other evils associated with poverty. Growing an industry often takes a great deal of time, relies on local resources an educated or trained workforce. Many of these elements are not present in areas where there is large numbers of low income women. Additionally many women are also the sole child care provider making it even more difficult to get the required education and training they need.
Piecework is any type of employment in which a worker is paid a fixed piece rate for each unit produced or action performed. Work could be assign to women contractors to work on pieces which could be performed at home, rather than within a factory or shop. The supply chain could also be made up by women who both dispatch work as needed to the contractors, and provide the local transportation networks for shipping. Education can be delivered using infographics to limit language gaps. Financing could be acquired through crowd funding or micro-financing.
Piecework Manufacturing Concept
Explain your idea in one sentence.
Create an international network of women manufacture and suppliers to empower women, and increase their safety by providing economic security
What is the need you are trying to solve?
Supporting Women’s Economic Empowerment and Self-Confidence
Who would be best equipped to implement this idea in the real world? You? Your organisation? Another organisation or entity?
I think an international aid group, or a manufacture with an existing international supply network would do the best job with start up.
Where should this idea be implemented?
I think this kind of network would benefit women anywhere, the big issue to overcome is finding raw materials in some regions that could feed an international manufacturing network.
How might you prototype this idea and test some of the assumptions behind it?
To prototype this idea, I would research an industry in which piecework could be used as a manufacturing process. Then based on that information develop prototypes for the training infographics and manufacturing. Provide product elements to someone unfamiliar with the product and ask them to assemble 1 unit.
