Creating a Community

Previous research I have conducted has helped me form an idea of how to create a safe community for women. Affordable housing is one possible way to help improve the health and well being of women in low income areas. Within this affordable housing community, there could be town hall discussions that would promote awareness in relation to the bystander effect. These discussions could help to reduce the problems that coincide with this effect and eventually create a safer environment for women in low income areas.

Safety doesn't need to be limited to the term violence. I believe that everyone is aware that affordable housing can help people pay for other necessary items in life to make them healthier such as healthcare and dental care. This in turn can make it safer for women by allowing them to be healthier.

When it comes to the town hall meeting, I believe everyone is aware of the bystander effect, in which one might think someone else will intervene or help someone in need. In the end nobody helps, and somebody gets hurt. Increasing awareness would be a great start in eliminating the bystander effect.

Explain your idea in one sentence.

Afforable housing and the bystander effect are two areas that could help make a safer environment for women,

What is the need you are trying to solve?

Creating a healthier lifestyle for women and increasing awareness amongst everyone in terms of helping out someone in trouble.

Who will benefit from this idea and how would you monitor its success?

Women and families will benefit from this idea. And monitoring attendance at town hall meetings as well as handing out surveys could help monitor success.

Who would be best equipped to implement this idea in the real world? You? Your organisation? Another organisation or entity?

Government would most likely be best equipped to implement this idea, but an organization might be able to push the government to work on this.

Where should this idea be implemented?

Any low income area where violence/poor health amongst women is an issue.

How might you prototype this idea and test some of the assumptions behind it?

Improving Lifestyle...Checking statistics in any kind of communities that already have a system similar to this idea.

To expand a little on this idea, I have received various feedback that is extremely helpful. A community isn't just based on the housing that is available, but it also includes transportation, which can be a very unsafe environment in low income areas due to various reasons (drugs, mental illness, etc.) These various reasons must be targeted within inner-citiy areas to help make it safer for women. Not only would it make it safer for women, but it would make it safer for everybody involved in the community.
