10,000 Steps is a challenge to get people moving & aware of their levels of exercise. Participants wear a pedometer & aim to reach 10,000 steps per day. It is often run in as a corporate workplace programme.
10,000 steps can be a team based activity in the workplace. Staff form teams and compete (in a friendly atmosphere) to log the most amount of steps, and to reach 10,000+ per day. In my workplace, this has resulted in employees going on lunchtime walks as groups, which in my experience has also offered a productive time for catching up with workmates and has resulted in improving communication and cohesion as a team (especially between managers and staff members). I think this initiative raises awareness and education about healthy amounts of daily exercise through learning by doing.
