Mike McDearmon's visionary concept from our Vibrant Cities Challenge provoked: "So you've got a brilliant idea to activate that vacant lot down the street. If you want to bring your idea to fruition, you now have to contain what in many cases is a Pandora's Box of zoning codes, policies, and regulations that stand in your way."

He went on to outline potential choke points and further to propose a streamlining of city codes/regulations into an easily accessible and user-friendly online manual. He consulted with local experts and stakeholders to iterate his idea for a framework would be inviting, supportive and easy to follow.

Elsewhere on the Inspiration phase for this challenge, James suggests a need for legal advice and helpful terminology for start-ups to be easily accessible.

How might we clarify processes for start-ups in an engaging and accessible way – especially in the context of the EU?

Great inspiration! Indeed simplifying the steps and not scaring people away is important. I remember hearing friends who were thinking of starting a business, in particular in France, and they kept telling me how difficult it was. Ashwin and Lei have had to go through a lot of paper works and administrative hoops to get the student chapter going.
