SAP's AppHaus - Supporting entrepreneurship and startup culture within a very large organization

SAP has recently launched a new venture within (and without) its organization that it calls the AppHaus. It seems to be doing things way outside of SAP's typical business at a radically different scale.

From http://www.bayforce.com/2012/03/13/saps-apphaus-and-consumer-apps/:

"Although SAP claims it 'still has the heart and passion of a startup,' it hardly resembles one in any other way... In order to provide that different way of developing applications which would be suitable for creating consumer apps, the founders of the AppHaus decided it needed a lean and creative startup culture. To foster this type of culture, SAP sent the AppHaus outside the walls of the SAP Labs campus in Palo Alto to rented quarters in nearby Los Altos. SAP has also added an AppHaus team in India and is assembling a third in China."

I am not sure it's exactly a model for how to support the random individual entrepreneur with an idea, but it certainly is an interesting model for the possible locations of enterpreneurship. And perhaps more big companies can be incentivized to follow a similar path, though perhaps with a more open innovation process? Dunno! But hopefully inspiring.
