FI-WARE FI-WARE

The major goal of the FI-WARE project is to build the Core Platform of the Future Internet.

This Core Platform will deliver a novel service infrastructure, building upon elements (called Generic Enablers - GEs) which offer reusable and commonly shared functions making it easier to develop Future Internet Applications in multiple sectors. FI-WARE aims to provide a framework for development of Future Internet applications, making use of advanced solutions in the following technology areas:

· Cloud Hosting

· Data/Context Management

· Internet of Things (IoT) Services Enablement

· Applications/Services Ecosystem and Delivery Framework

· Security

· Interface to Networks and Devices (I2ND)

The open innovation lab will be available for SMEs that will have the opportunity of experimenting with these Generic Enablers. This is a unique opportunity for SMEs and start-ups, due to the fact that they could test cutting edge technology, without any need for investment.

FI-WARE Open Innovation Lab will comprise all what is needed to stimulate awareness among target application providers and users so that they feel attracted to participate and build a community. It will also bring tools helping members of the community to share their experiences, needs, etc. Activities to foster the Open Innovation Lab such as Dissemination, Individual SMEs and developers / Competitions / Hackthons / will be carried out.


How will your concept support web entrepreneurship?

The open innovation lab provides technology that is not available for SMEs and Start-ups nowadays. The experimentation capacities provided by the Open innovation lab are out of reach for many small and medium-size businesses. So, the Open innovation lab opens a market that is currently limited to a few strong players. The High quality applications provided by FI-WARE were born from relevant European research projects; this is a great opportunity to transfer research results into the market. In other words the Open Innovation lab should help to pass across the "valley of death".

What kinds of resources will be needed to get this concept off the ground and scale it?

The FI-WARE project is going to develop the technical infrastructure, but great added value could be generated through the following additional elements: • Funding to replicate the test-bed infrastructure in other European locations to ensure application scalability • Stakeholders in order to build an initial community that acts as validator of the concept from a business point of view and encourage others to follow • Business angels • Organizations with business knowledge • Policy initiatives that promote and support the use of the Open Innovation lab

How could we get started?

o Involve the main industrial actors in different sectors, government (cities) eager to use a new generation of Internet-based applications to increase efficiency and address market demands in the new digital era o Attract potential application developers (development communities, Universities, SME associations, etc) that give answer to the needs described above o Support the deployment and replication of the test bed in several EU countries through: - Setting up the right partnerships to host and operate the technical infrastructure - Making available financial support (this could happen by means of private or public funds) to extend and replicate the test bed o Engage organizations with business skills that could guide entrepreneurs in the use of these resources in a sustainable way and help in the creation of new companies

I really like the openess of this idea to everyone equally in a way that the best ideas will benefit everyone. It would be important to host this idea with an organization that has a "neutrality" or "credibility" that makes people trust it as a "location" for their creative conversations.

May be you also add a component like croud sourcing. If it could be possible to bring developer all over europe together at one digital workplace at the same time, they could help each other in no time. How about a social media component like IBM is doing it, using a social network similar to facebook. There everyone works on one problem exchanging all of their ideas at the same time, changing the problem to a solution. Its like a big market place of workspaces for problems/issues etc.

Awesome concept. Would use right right away. But the lab should also include tutoring lessons for the ones less geeky but who are still interested in web entrepreneurship. Having explanation videos and guide books on how certain programmes work, how they are being implemented etc would be very helpful. I

From reading about the open innovation lab, I am envisioning making the tools for development readily available and easy to play with. I see capturing the SME audience as a potential challenge. My target audience would be the younger generation of aspiring experts. I think this concept would also be viable in areas outside of Europe.

Very interesting, specially if the entry cost for people is 0. This mean that deploy a solution with a limited expenses CPU/Bandwith in order to lower the entry barrier.
