How does your idea apply new technologies to make agriculture and water systems more resilient in the face of climate threats?

The prevailing challenges to make Watershed resilient is the unplanned usage of water for agriculture purposes without dependence on weather forecasts, lack of Climate resilient and low water crop selection , effective usage of systems like drip systems against furrow etc. Many of these result due to lack of knowledge with the stakeholders involved primarily the farmer. Our Technology would enable farmers adopt required practices of conserving water and utilisation in an effective manner.

The project aims to strengthen the resilience of farmers in rain-fed agricultural areas by making them partners and helping them adopt to newer climate smart practices by effective utilisation and conservation of watersheds .The major activities for this project are 

  • Baseline Survey : Discussions with village community members and groups to understand their perception on the relationship between land, crops and water conservation and their current prevailing practices.

  • Using Alternate source of Data which includes past weather trends and satellite imagery to build models of correlation and find gaps and solutions.

  • Compilation of information as a climate resilient practice which can be implemented along with the farmers and other consultants/Project coordinators for 1-3 years showcasing the impact of the climate resilient practices and the overall effect on the ecosystem.  

  • Decision support tool - Mobile apps for field team , farmer Apps , Web and Analytics to continuously monitor project and observe the impact on real time which making corrections on the go.

  • Overall impact : Farmer sustainability around the watersheds through efficient adoption of climate smart agriculture.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Our Project on Climate resilient Agriculture is already being implemented in India and Africa and is being funded by Development Agencies like World Bank , UKAID etc. We are ready to deploy the solution with all our experiential learnings of the past 7 years.

  • Operating Business: I have fulfilled the stages of testing, undertaken a full scale roll-out, and am currently operating this idea as a business.

How do you plan to grow or scale this idea?

This Product SmartFarm is already rolling out on scale basis and impacting 100,000+ farmers in different locations around the world. The scale would come from larger involvement of government , Businesses and organisations to impact their initiatives along with the adoption of farmers directly.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Founded in August 2010 in Bangalore, Cropin Technology Solutions is a Farm Management- Monitoring-Traceability (agriculture data and analytics) business based in Bangalore. Cropin Provides SaaS based service to Agribusinesses in India and other developing nations, enabling clients to analyse, interpret and gain real time insight on, Standing crop and project spanning over large geographies enabling them to take corrective measure on time. In India or any developing countries there is a huge scarcity of agriculture data as this space has not been digitized yet. We are working with over 70+ businesses across the world with over 1760 different crop varieties .
