How does your idea apply new technologies to make agriculture and water systems more resilient in the face of climate threats?

There is therefore need to improve the situation through appropriate interventions. Water and sanitation promotion is vital.Prudent water management is crucial for reaching national development objectives and for improving the livelihoods of poor people. It is also a vital component of actions to improve environmental sustainability, by maintaining the integrity of ecosystems and by bringing together stakeholders around key resources that could either unite or divide the western Kenya communiti

With the long deeper research, African Christians organization Network (ACON)

Organization designed a Village Development Model (VDM) which consists of six activities, in the year of 2000 in consultation with the staff members of ACON and Board members according to the need of community to reduce the eliminate the causes of poverty among the poverty stricken people. In 2002 ACON has been introduced VDM model, through the base of some activities implemented in villages of Matungu area and results life changing impact in the community at Matungu area. After implementation of the said Model activities the Changes/results are positive, quite visible and satisfactory. Now we take this opportunity to Introduce/present the same with your esteemed organization. The following seven Components/activities of the Village Development Model consisting innovative and local based techniques to promote local resources and community mobilization as well as indigenous knowledge among rural poor communities within a specific time period, the purpose of the innovative VDM establishment is to promote sustainable rural development in far and scattered rural area of western Kenya are vulnerable and affected.

The Village Development Model Activities are:

1) Women and Youth Group/Organizing CBOs/SHG

2) Promotion of Useful modern farming technologies

3) Kitchen Gardening at Household level using Biochar

4) Safe Drinking Water through Ceramic water Filter

5) Fuel-Efficient Stoves Cooking Technology

On the completion of the project they can be able to run their own micro projects through village based CBO in their village and will be able continue the project activities.

. Skills transferred among the beneficiaries.

. They will be organized and able to take decision on village level.

. Interfaith harmony will be promoted.

. Start thinking.

. Coordination/communication improved among the beneficiaries.

. Adult Literacy School will be constructed in their village and will be use full for

subsequent generation.

. Schools will be used as a Place where they can sit/gather for any development

activities in their village which previously not in practice.

. Reading/writing/counting capacity will be increased among the Women.

. Identification of their basic needs and wants

. Promotion of the marketing

. Long term relief from the money lenders.

. Improvement in health condition through safe drinking water, Smokeless Stoves and

Kitchen gardening to getting fresh vegetable.

. Able to sensitize government to solve their problems.

. Strong linkages will be developed among the Government Department.

. Job opportunity will be increased

. Able to support their family

. Future will be moving towards saved

Budget Village wise

For one village the budget will be in US$25,000

The sustainability of the project can be measured after the completion of the proposed village

Development model project as follows:

a. The targeted village will have their own organized CBOs/SHGs

b. At least 30 families of one village will have a smoke free cooking technology, and save

50% wood from fire and 50% reduction in gas emissions

c. The targeted villages are using a safe drinking water through the construction of Bio—

Sand filter units at their house hold level.

d. Women of the each village are able to read and write and empowered to take part in decision making process.

e. The (RLFs) revolving loan funds are established in their own village and the recycling process is being started for the communities.

f. The targeted village families have a fresh vegetable at household level and are trained

to cultivate vegetable at house hold level.

g. Useful animal breeds’ importance and awareness promoted through heifers and goat

Scheme. All the villagers of the targeted village are running their village based CBO/SHG and saving on regular basis.

i. The sustainable development is initiated to move towards MDG millennium development goals.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Project staff simply facilitates community members through a self-directed process of problem identification followed by identification and analysis of locally feasible interventions. PRA continues to be used extensively during initial community mobilization activities. This is to ensure that fully community participation in decision-making occurs at the immediate start of each village’s activities. Communities select representatives (PRA teams) to use participatory tools –such as community

We are excited to learn about ideas at diverse stages of development. At what stage would you currently classify your idea as? (multiple choice)

  • Research & Early Testing: I am exploring my idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.
  • Prototyping: I have done some small tests or experiments with prospective users to continue developing my idea.
  • Piloting: I have started to implement my finalized solution with a first set of real users.
  • Full Scale Roll-Out: I have completed a pilot and analyzed the results. I am ready to expand the pilot significantly.

How do you plan to grow or scale this idea?

It is important for any intervention that is intended to result in greater climate change resilience of the ecosystem and of human activities and livelihoods to have two necessary ingredients: Local Resources that make the intervention possible and Proven Practices that have demonstrated effectiveness towards increasing the ecosystem’s resilience to climate change. Both of these ingredients must exist, one will fail without the other. ACON has demonstrated both of these to exist.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Capacity building and resource mobilization training from OpenlDEO will be most useful

This idea emerged from:

The strategy to achieve effective and sustainable benefits rests on seven key project components, which are described below. The first component-presented (Integrated programming) is primarily concerned with effectiveness. The remaining six (Full community participation, use of community participatory methodologies, appropriate and environmentally safe technology, gender fairness, targeting of children’s pedagogy, and partnership/with applicable government of Kenya departments)

Tell us about your work experience:

l have more than ten years work experience in ;• Initiation and implementation of projects and programmes geared towards community development; • Identification and formulation of NGO’s projects and programmes • Preparation of project proposals, conducting NGO’s diagnostic studies and projects prefeasibility and feasibility studies. • Research and development sustainable projects and programmes.
