The Good Gym

The Good Gym connects exercise with community work, motivating people to get out into their streets, connect with other people of older generations, and do some volunteer work. Could people be motivated to do good for their city in this way?

The Good Gym pairs runners with isolated less-mobile people in their area. Runners jog to their house, deliver something nice, have a brief chat and are on their way again.

The programme connects seemingly seperate activities to motivate people to get out, get fit, meet others (generally of a different age group) and support community projects (such as community gardens).

It helps people get fit by providing a good reason to go for a run and it helps the person being visited by providing them with some friendly human contact and a newspaper or piece of fruit.

The Good Gym connects youth to elderly, offering the ability for youth to connect to history of place - an important link when building community. It also shows how two activities can be connected to motivate people to do good for their community.

Still, always thinking about your idea Charlotte! From ways to market the idea to seniors (church, grocery stores, flyers, old-fashion knocking on doors!) to ways to connect the runners in the community. I'll be following your groups work in the U.K.

This is not my idea (but i wish it was!), i just saw it on the internet and thought I'd post it up as an inspiration. I know that it now exists in New York City, for the Americans wishing to become involved.

Oh. Sounds good. Would love to get it going here in Chicago! Thanks Charlotte
