When cities are in decline, people have lost their pride in the city they live in. To restore the proud you can involve the locals through social media in creating a new, stronger identity for the city.
The Mexican soccer team Murcielagos Fc uses social media to determine who is playing the next match. This resulted in the best season in the teams history. This makes the local community proud of the team and also proud on their city/ community.
Who needs a trainer when you have a crowd
Cultivating a Sense of Local Pride and Belonging - Alicia Riley here Inspiration talks about "How powerful it is to think about what a city means to its residents' identities".
Create gatherings with locals to determine the things that make or made them proud. Local sports clubs, local industries, local brands, a strong local music culture, community garden etc.
Support the local pride by facilitating an online and offline social platform where the crowd can nurture the pride! We maybe could use the
Lego Serious Play to get inspirations.
What resources (money, time, people, technology, etc) will your concept need to be successful?
- Online social platform for example http://www.murcielagosfc.com/site/murcielagos
- Script to create pride and success via crowdsourcing.
- Project coordinator and inspirator, who organizes meetings for determining the pride
- An active community/ goodwill
- Council needs to support this 100% to give the example and the willingness to give the power to the crowd!
What steps could you take to implement this idea today?
Make appointments with local council people, build a facebook page as an example, talk to the soccer team that set the example in Mexico. Starts discovering what the local community is proud of. Talk to elderly people in the city to discover where they used to be proud of. Talk to the youngster to discover where they are proud of at the moment. Could there be a combination?
How can your idea be scaled so that it's implemented in cities around the world?
Create an open source community to create the online platform and the script. This way anybody can use this idea an implement it in his/ here local community/ city!
