Urban Aquaculture cum Vertical Farming System for slums
Design an aquaculture cum vertical farming system that is a combination of compost and aquaculture to grow food
EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA
Grow vegetable and fish for own consumption or sale. This system is a combination of vertical farming with soil and compost and aquaculture. This will allow the family to grow a wider range of vegetables. This system incorporates a composting system that turn waste from kitchen into compost. Waste can also be vegetables that are discarded in the market. The combination of aquaculture with vertical farming will grow enough vegetables and fishes to make the system financially viable. The vertical farm will use the nutrient rich water from the fish tank as well as the compost.
To facilitate troubleshooting, low cost electronics monitoring of probes ( measure PH, temperature etc) will provide visual cues on how the system is behaving. Arduino is a low cost computer board that allows sophisticated monitoring at very low cost. Solar panels will provide the energy needed for the pumps and monitoring device.
This system should provide enough vegetables for a family of six all year round. As it is closed system, it is independent of whether there is rain or flood. The fishes can provide protein for the family.
Slum dwellers will be able to grow their own food and may even sell some of it
The idea can be implemented in slums where there is a space of at least 1m by 2m that is open to the sun. For example in balconies or roof tops.
HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?
NGOs and Governments can help provide training or subsidies for slum dwellers to construct such a system. The system does not require whole day monitoring .This free the slum dweller to earn income as odd job labourers. It is climate proof and instantly provides income for the family or at least save them from having to buy vegetables and fish.
