during the public cleaning in one of the slums around KAMPALA.youth came together to work
youth civic engagement. refugees and none refugees coming together to clean the environment in which they live. the precious gift we all share
EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA
the project aims at creating on line and off line platforms and community centres where slum dwellers meet, talk, exchange ideas, freely express them selves to address issues affecting them.
we are planning to use community centers, media and social media, online discussions, SMS, and ICT to train,sensitize,mentor,warn communities and work with them to solve issues of waste management, since this affects much these communities mostly during rainy season,water and sanitation;
Monitoring of climate change, especially through integration of large scale approaches such as geographical information systems, small scale technologies such as measurements through GPRS enabled mobile phones
Leverage of locally available media especially through a multitude of mobile applications and integration of local radio in to warning systems
Our understanding of climate change processes need to be improved and analyzed at the local level. More precise monitoring of changes and sharing of information among multiple different stakeholders(Community, government and donors) are crucial.
Climate change is contextual local circumstances need to be taken in to account, a high level policy must also work to facilitate and coordinate more fine-gained and community – specific interventions.
Beneficiaries are all the people living in slums. through the Media and local authorities the information will be spread, but also the social media will be used for open discussions,invitation to participate to training if any. from different community center we plan to attend to many people for training, sensitization, mentor ship.
we plan to implement this project in Kampala/Uganda
HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?
The government through the Kampala capital city Authority tries to evacuate solid waste from different places despite of the poor accessibility of many places by KCCA tracks. but community members are aware of those services and we plan to be in partnership with the government. many other organizations are putting hands together to help the slum dwellers, we plan to build on their effort to well serve the people expecting much from us.
since we are already registered by the government under the ministry of internal affairs, the organisation managed and serving refugees and vulnerable host community members,under the ministry of disaster preparedness, we always work with our partner organizations and different networks of course the community as well.
