Renewable energy in slums

What sources of renewable energy can we imagine for slums? Trash? Human waste? What else?

EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Renewable energy is a great opportunity to decrease costs, amplify the acess to eletricity in underserved areas and generate jobs/income opportunities in the communities. In Brazil, it's common to see in many slums illegal access to electricity, as people say "gato". In addition to be illegal, the lack of a proper installation let the whole slum vulnerable to accidents, like a fire. And in addition to the solar energy, what other sources of energy can we imagine for slums? From the feedback given by Laurent - see on the comments - this idea also connects directly to sanitation management, that's another huge challenge to face in slums. And IDEO has already worked on a business model for sanitation management in Ghana. Check here: http://fr.slideshare.net/jocelynwyatt/ghana-sanitation-opportunities Considering this IDEO business model on sanitation management, what else could we consider?

WHO BENEFITS?

For those who live in the slums, an opportunity to access cheaper and safer eletricity. Moreover, a great opportunity for income generation and social businesses since people are trained to install and maintain the equipments.

HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?

An opportunity to attend a demand for energy using natural sources of energy like the sunlight and generate income locally. It's also an opportunity to think about other sources of energy that could be used such as trashs and human waste, as many slums aren't covered by waste management services, for example.

This idea is really interesting and there are many solutions for generating electricity from sludge management.

I am thinking about a mechanism based on dry toilets collected every day/week and centralised in one place that produce electricity.
The innovation can be to include within the toilets a battery that can be used by the families. These battery can then be used for day to day usage.

OpenIdeo has already created a business model for sanitation management in ghana. Take a look at http://fr.slideshare.net/jocelynwyatt/ghana-sanitation-opportunities

Thanks Laurent for your feedbacks and for indicate the 2 articles! I didn't remember the IDEO business model for sanitation management, that's directly connected to this idea. I've already added about the sanitation management on the description.

Great build on your previous post Andre! Check out the business model and distribution strategy of Pollinate Energy: https://pollinateenergy.org/ It's great example of renewable energy can strengthen communities on multiple levels.

Hi Shane, I didn't remember this business model before. The idea of Pollinate Energy is another one that can be applied to slums in other parts of the world, even in nomadic and rural communities.
