EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Our team aims to address three issues in Bangkok’s slum area along the canal, which are the most vulnerable area in Bangkok for flooding and sanitary failure. The three issues are; preparing for the event of flooding, improve water quality and sanitary, and building community through public space. We are proposing three types of integrated infrastructure for these issues; integrated constructed wetland pocket park, new canal cross section and add-on element for slum housing. Firstly, we need to mention that slum settlements along the canals in Bangkok is in the process of redevelopment. The Bangkok municipalities together with the community are planning new housing project for the community, and we would like to propose our integrated system into their projects. The integrated constructed wetland will treat grey water after primary household treatment before releasing them to the canal. It will be a part of the public space that would also retain rainwater within the area. The wetland will integrate into the new canal cross section. The new canal will be built out of gabions instead of concrete planks in the trapezoidal shape since this section provide better land protection, generate subtler waves and let the water drain faster. The gabions section also allows us to grow bioremediation plant to treat water in the canal body. Also, the houses in the area should be able to leverage itself when sudden floods attack the city and having micro rain garden to absorb rainwater.

WHO BENEFITS?

1. The slum community along the canal is the main beneficiary of this proposal. They will have a better livelihood from small add-on during the design phase of this community renewal project. 2. If this project works and replicates in larger scale, it could prevent or slow down floods in Bangkok which more than 10 million people would get benefit from this.

HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?

We would like to integrate our idea into the redevelopment project which is now processing by the Bangkok Municipal Authorities and the Canal community. The aim of this project is to integrate our design in the design phase of this project, so we could bring in public participation and use resource smartly. We also consider both acute and chronic event when proposing these ideas.

We are a team of 3 landscape architects from Bangkok, Thailand, who are now working and studying abroad. Although we have not yet working with the organization mentioned but having our project noticed on an international platform would influence them to integrate water management to designing phase.
