Hourglass algae lamp

Algae lamp are great where electricity is lacking. However they need to be in motion to emit light. Hence the liquid motion of the hourglass

EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Light is important during the evening to keep safe and develop education. It allows people to read and share.

WHO BENEFITS?

Kids and adult- reading groups like the one describe in the previous Amplify challenge ! It can be implemented in places where there is a lack of electricty. It can also help bring people together : you need someone to harvest the first algae and then redistribute it.

HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?

Currently, the sketch made does not take into account building material that are found on site. But it's easy to imagine building it out of see through plastic bottles. Also I should develop an infrastructure that is easy to build to farm the algae.

Neat idea. What kind of algae would be used for this project? Is it easy to obtain? How long would the light last daily/weekly/yearly?

Hello ! I was thinking to use pyrocystis fusiformis which seems to be the most common and cheaper. There are other pyrocystis which could be used. You can order it online on different website such as empco.org. The actual light can live almost undefinitely it depends on how careful you are with them. It requires a bit of maintenance to keep the population of algae at certain level for instance. The period of ON light depends on how big is the hourglass related to the hole. If your question refers to the stress induced to the production of light and how long it should be used everyday- this I dont know the answer.
What I am proposing here is a simple mechanical device to keep the algae in motion. This motion could be made in different ways such as this hourglass or little japanses cascade made of bamboo (don't remember the official name) or a pendulum style.

Thanks for your reply. What kind of maintenance is required to keep the population of algae at the certain level?

I am glad that this idea made through the first round of selection. I will certainly check in detail the required maintenance. Also to make this idea more realistic, I would be glad if you could help me on the possibility to spread the idea : through an organization or through internet (hoping that someone in the slums picks up the idea). This is quite important to understand who will be the first to handle it and to know what kind of teaching/ training will be required for the maintenance and also the making of a algae farm.
Have a good day

Hello,
here are some answers on the required maintenance
Room temperature of 18 to 24

Need undirect sunlight for photosynthesis sun light to avoid variation of temperature and overheating
Every 1 month or 2 months to discard between 50 to 70% of the liquid to keep growth culture healthy

Regards
