"Emergency kit" cabinets
8 Weather-resistant street cabinets with multiple "emergency kits" e.g. clean-water kit (purifying tablets), bad weather kit (blankets), etc
EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA
Un-Habitat states that the number of people living in slum conditions is estimated at 863 million (making up 33% of the urban population in the developing world) in 2012, in contrast to 760 million in 2000.
This seems to be an insurmountable problem. Climate issues only increase the issues, with floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and droughts adding up insult to injury for those living in extreme poverty. This is a global and growing problem, as population expansion places more and more people in disastrous and unsustainable living conditions. It is an issue we cannot ignore, but cannot even solve easily.
My solution is a very simple one, cheap and quickly actionable across these communities. It is not meant to eradicate the issue, but simply to alleviate the pain, right now.
The idea is to have emergency kits, in the form of weather-resistant cabinets, with a series of quickly accessible and usable solutions for a variety of issues and challenging situations, where infrastructure (such as hospitals, schools, police, etc.) is not present.
The kits can be customized and adapted to local needs.
A second phase, could include adding "dial pads" with "codes" to open the cabinets that can be provided by a distributing organization, so that the cabinets are not raided more than needed.
Those living in slum communities: without food, clean water, energy, shelter, and other basics, living in extreme and/or unacceptable conditions and susceptible to health issues, climate challenges, diseases, and other dangers. With this idea they will be able to possibly alleviate some of the emergencies, in a first response scenario.
HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?
This idea provides a cheap, basic infrastructure, which is replicable and customizable to local needs to address local challenges, and those arising from climate issues. It can be sponsored and supported by individuals, organizations and/or governments. It can be easily and quickly replenished, as the supplies are used and decrease.
