ELON MUSC Environmental and Logistic Opportunities for Nourishment: Modular Urban Sustainable Communities
Create hubs educating people on sustainability and entrepreneurship, building urban farms and recycling to create sustainable communities.
EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA
Slavery, reliance on large scale farming (with the inherent 40% loss of produce in logistics due to corruption or spoilage), reliance on pesticides/fertilizers, ocean depletion, lack of fertile soil, lack of protein, illegal fishing, reliance on government handouts, people at the BOP can't climb the socio-economic ladder, etc.
Modular aquaponic farming in urban environments with community action.
By solar power, the only input is fish food (which could also be grown locally, such as algae, water cress, worms) and a little bit of water every month to offset evaporation.
Local material can be used for 80% of the material needed: plastic bottles, garbage cans, PVC pipe, shipping pallets. Only need to purchase water pumps and solar panels.
Purchase some systems out of new material, and then educate communities how the system works, so they can recreate them with locally sourced material for more sustainable systems. With teamwork, and shared spaces, they can make bigger systems within greenhouses, and capture rain water to all together completely nullify the need of outside sources.
They are then creating their own health and wealth, and not relying on aid. Eventually with more education on the science behind how aquaponics is helping them, say from the way bacteria help, or how the physics works, they can get degrees and get out of urban slums, and reinvest in their families to solve the problem.
Everyone benefits. With an improved bottom of the pyramid, the rest of society is more structurally sound, crime decreases, which will decrease stress, increase health, increase the progress of technology, etc.
Our direct beneficiaries are those living in poverty, youth at risk, ex-convicts, physically/mentally handicapped, who will directly receive aquaponic systems, thus creating a sustainable source of food and income. This idea is being implemented worldwide, and will continue to do so.
HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?
It is completely focused on solving these issues.
Aquaponic systems can be elevated, even a meter off the ground (thus not breaking anyone's back in farming) in case of flooding.
They can be built vertically, saving space.
They offer empowerment to people of all ages, sex, race, religion, to create for themselves a sustainable source of food.
Solar systems and water pumps are extremely inexpensive.
This system is a preventative measure for anything to come.
