EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Problem Statement: Evacuation process is extremely difficult in densely populated urban slums. Due to poor infrastructure and overcrowding, it gets more restricted for children, seniors and people with disabilities to self evacuate. More often, aerial method of evacuation is implemented in these situations, where people are rescued using a harness and are air-lifted from ground up. Idea: By painting roofs based on number dependents, children and people with disabilities will help aerial rescue crew to focus on houses that need immediate attention. A standardized color code system as follows can assist in streamlining the rescue plans: 1. Red roofs indicate houses with low ratio of adults to children, so gear with several harness can lift multiple children in one air-lift. 2. Blue roofs indicate houses that host physically disabled individuals, so the harness can be customized for extra padding/cushion to support victim's weight. 3. Yellow roofs indicate where ratio of adults to senior citizen is low. Having a simple system like this, can help prepare rescue crew in advance and manage resources/gear/tools efficiently. Feedback from OpenIDEO community: Enrique Terrado shared about a modular retirement community in Lisbon, where the roof turns bright red when someone inside sounds the alarm. WHO BENEFITS?

The standardized color mapping system can be implemented in high density urban slum communities, where people are not self reliant due to age (too young or too old) or disabilities.

HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?

The color mapping urban slum idea is best suited for slums are poorly planned and are often illegal (in India). Due to it's vastness, they cannot be rebuilt so there needs to be a plan that is scale-able without disrupting the existing structure.

Hi Swapna,it requires tremendous efforts to input this idea in developing nation. Painting houses will be helpful during emergency however issue arises the required fund for incorporating the practice,But idea will be helpful in emergency evacuation. It requires support from the local government body to maintain painting of slum houses and regular maintenance from the members.

I agree that this idea requires slight effort and so does any effort that require restructuring project or let alone build something in high density slums in India. Compared to building from scratch this is least cumbersome and I was thinking from that perspective . Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
