EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

PROBLEMS
1) A vicious cycle of helplessness within urban slums resulting in a poverty (victim) mindset.

2) Dire and unstable slum physical environments causing acute and chronic stress, entrenching further the vicious cycle of overwhelming helplessness

PROPOSED IDEAS
PHASE I - COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT: Conduct community engagement workshops by partnering with Emerging Leaders, a nonprofit that has delivered transformational community workshop for 10 years with successful outcomes in leadership sustainability and resilience to change for the individual and community.

PHASE II - RESILIENT URBAN SLUM UPGRADE: To tackle KEY RESILIENCY AREAS - Poverty, Urban Development and Climate Change, collaborate with local and international partners to develop and implement a Slum Upgrading PROGRAM, supported by SYSTEMS THINKING, SUSTAINABILITY DESIGN PRINCIPLES, BIOMIMICRY & low cost NEW TECHNOLOGIES with RECYCLE & ZERO WASTE goals.

This program will cover the 4 Urban Slum Challenges: Community, Communication, Small Scale Infrastructure, and Water Supply. See INNOVATIVE IDEAS in videos and pdf for each.

The program will be supported and advised by local and international partners with expertise and experience on successful and resilient slum upgrading techniques, methodologies and tools that have worked in other urban slums all over the world. The urban slum community will then tailor and customise these ideas to be workable for their own community and to their desired goals.

WHO BENEFITS?

Beneficiaries: Vulnerable urban slum dwellers in cities

Benefits:
Short term: Instill a sense of pride, empowerment and resiliency among individuals and its community, supported by a resilient, clean, and safe slum physical environment.

Medium term: Empower future generations of urban slum dwellers’ to achieve financial freedom and afford permanent housing.

Long term: Total eradication of urban slums.

Locations: Jakarta + Indonesia, expanding to IDEO’s 42 priority countries.

HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?

SLUM RESILIENCY needs to take into account: POVERTY, URBAN DEVELOPMENT and CLIMATE CHANGE. We aim to work with local and international partners (nonprofits, NGOs, government authorities, etc), and urban slum dwellers so that considerations of existing efforts would be part of the Phase 1 and Phase 2 process.

Collective collaboration allows to support the slum communities to design and develop their slum upgrading initiatives in a holistic manner, merging existing with new to tackle climate change.

Design Principles
The focus is on community engagement and empowering communities and their leaders to design, develop and pilot their own slum upgrading initiative in collaboration with our partners, who already use successful design approaches similar to IDEO's 6 design principles.

Every urban slum community will have its own unique set of complexities. In collaborating with the community, we will be able to support them to develop solutions with these design principles in mind.

Consequently, the aim is to submit all 4 ideas under this one Community idea for Ideo’s Urban Slum Challenge. When designing and developing for Urban Slum Upgrading, as part of the process, innovative and creative ideas would emerge covering the 4 Urban Slum Challenge areas, by the urban slum people for the urban slum people.

By looking at the whole community system as an interactive and interdynamic entity, we reinforce community resilience at all levels for urban slum dwellers facing daily and global climate change challenges (ie. Columbia’s Medellin successful Urban Slum Upgrade).
