EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

To avoid local governments regulations, most of the time these communities establish and grow in high risk areas near mountains, lagoons, rivers and alike. Not only this, but the lack of proper drainage systems increases exponentially the impact of natural disaster like floods and landslides. Floods and landslides are take the life of many people living in slums, most of the time because of the lack of alerting systems and support to evacuate to other places. In many cases, people is just waiting inside their homes without acknowledging the risk. In places like Niteroi, Brazil, simple but efficient systems area being implemented to alert the community of these risks, installing alarms that can be actioned remotely based on pluviometers and land-movement sensors. This can give families valuable minutes to evacuate high risk areas. We can leverage this kind of systems, powered by IoT, to implement more integrated solutions that can not only alert but connect with local authorities to promote more proactive actions. The cost of this kind of infrastructure is getting cheaper every day, and collaboration with DYO centers (ex. FAB LABs) can support the fabrication of these devices

WHO BENEFITS?

This kind of systems can help communities located in high risk regions (floods and landslide). Time is gold when we are dealing with this kind of situations. Proactive actions can be taken leveraged by IoT.

HOW DOES YOUR IDEA TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SLUMS AND CLIMATE CHANGE?

Three factors are combined in this context: - The increase of urban populations - Climate Changes and Risk areas - Little proactivity of local authorities. We can create more connected systems to focus on proper communication & support between authorities and the community and also giving people the right of information. Most of us are not aware on the value of information, because its always in our hands (smartphone). How can we give people living in slums this right?
