Street trees do so much. They are subtle in their ways. As trees, they sequester CO2 from the atmosphere while releasing O2 back in to the air without our notice. Tree lined street are traffic calming. They intercept rainfall attenuating stormwater flows. Shade the streets and provide habitat for wildlife. As living things they connect us to nature which were are an integral part. If you can see the value of street trees conceive Sunnyvale treeless. Tree makes Sunnyvale home.

How are you connected to Sunnyvale?

  • I work for the City of Sunnyvale.

What type of applicant are you?

  • Team

Stage of Development.

  • Idea with active ongoing efforts (ready to be scaled for Sunnyvale)

What problem are you aiming to solve? (100 words)

Making Sunnyvale a more livable place where people can interact freely Trees tie us to the living environment. Is that not what we are trying to do, rotect and preserve our precious Mother Earth?

Tell us more about your climate strategy or solution (500 words)

By planting out our city streets with street tree we can directly reduce CO2 from the atmosphere as well as filter dust, PM10, and other pollutants, attenuate stormwater flows, slow down cars on the streets. Make the neighborhoods more socially inviting increasing interaction between neighbors.

Describe how your solution could be a game-changer for your selected Opportunity Area (100 words)

Research has shown that trees directly affect our health. In the presence of tree blood pressures go down. People are more social with trees over their heads. Although tree lined streets will not solve global warming itself it will make a difference to our Earth and ourselves.

Explain how your idea would be implemented in Sunnyvale (700 words)

Between direct funding from the City, grand funding, donations and outreach to the community at large, I believe we can plant more trees in Sunnyvale. The first step is to educate the public as to the benefits of trees. Concurrently seek grant funding as matching funding or direct donations.

What kind of impact will your idea have? (250 words)

Trees are subtle, they remove carbon dioxide directly. Even if we as residents of Earth reduce our carbon emissions we do not eliminate them. Tree actually removes CO2 form the air We need more trees here on planet Earth to counter our carbon emissions.

Feasibility: Where are you with understanding the feasibility of your idea? Describe what you’ve done so far and your plans. (500 words)

Sunnyvale does have a street tree program. Of the 38,000 existing street trees, Sunnyvale does a good job in caring for them. We still need more trees. Easily we could add 10,000 more street trees to Sunnyvale streets.

As you consider your next steps, what kinds of help could you use? Is there a type of expertise that would be most helpful? (300 words)

Connecting to the city to funding sources not only for initial planting of trees but their long term care.
