What problem are you aiming to solve? (100 words)

Not many Sunnyvale residents are aware of the Climate Action Plan and the steps the city is taking to reduce emissions. This project aims to generate support and spread knowledge of Sunnyvale's goals.

Tell us more about your climate strategy or solution (500 words)

The two most important things that this program should raise awareness for is the significance of climate change and the steps that Sunnyvale are taking in order to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions. In order to do this, a variety of programs that address various aspects of climate change (sea level rise, extreme weather, etc.) that each explain small measures that every resident can take in order to contribute. A key aspect of changing behavior is breaking the mental block that one’s minor, individual changes will not help in any way. By breaking this barrier, the city of Sunnyvale can accelerate their progress in becoming a carbon-neutral community.
First, programs should be run at schools in Sunnyvale in order to instill a mindset of being conscious of the carbon emissions that one generates. They may include skits or interactive activities in order to accomplish this. The programs should cover the effects that our fossil-fuel dependent activities have on the environment, as well as what everyone can do in order to reach Sunnyvale’s goals. By training kids to make environmentally conscious choices, they will develop environmentally friendly habits for a lifetime, and carry what they learn back to their households, which in turn creates a large, short-term impact.
Next, data regarding various aspects of energy and resource consumption should be converted into interesting graphics that can capture the attention of residents. These graphics should also have tips for reaching the goals outlined in Sunnyvale’s CAP 2.0 plan. Surveys could also potentially be distributed to track progress.

Describe how your solution could be a game-changer for your selected Opportunity Area (100 words)

This project paves the road for game-changer solutions. In a sense, it is the foundation upon which any steps towards becoming more environmentally friendly will be built. Public support is the single, most vital factor for anything the city of Sunnyvale aims to accomplish. Through these programs, support will become more widespread and residents will be more well-informed.

Explain how your idea would be implemented in Sunnyvale (700 words)

Set up graphics and posters in public areas such as parks and libraries, and distribute posters to schools and other facilities. Organize events at public events and assemblies at schools to educate residents on the issues Sunnyvale is tackling through CAP, and what the responsibilities of the residents are.

What kind of impact will your idea have? (250 words)

The impact of a successful program of this type on Sunnyvale’s goals would be huge. If everyone is willing to take steps to reduce their carbon footprint and is supportive of all decisions the city of Sunnyvale takes in order to reach their goals for 2030 and 2050, the process of becoming carbon-neutral would be much easier and faster.

Scale: Describe how your idea could reach a significant number of people affected. (250 words)

This program aims to reach as much of Sunnyvale as possible, so programs would be designed to connect with adults and children alike. The inclusion of youth is a vital aspect of this project, as they are the ones that will need to carry out the goals that Sunnyvale has laid out.

Feasibility: Where are you with understanding the feasibility of your idea? Describe what you’ve done so far and your plans. (500 words)

This project can be accomplished with a driven team and cooperation from schools, parks, libraries, and other Sunnyvale facilities. Initially, some time would need to be put in to find or collect data and design graphics and posters, as well as organizing events at schools and libraries. Time would then need to be put in to run those events. Some system by which people can ask questions regarding CAP 2.0 or questions about environmentalism and conserving natural resources would also need to be established and maintained. Lastly, regular updates to statistics and data (potentially on a website/making new graphics) would be needed in order to track progress and inform residents.

As you consider your next steps, what kinds of help could you use? Is there a type of expertise that would be most helpful? (300 words)

Assistance with coordination with schools and public events would be necessary. Additionally, graphics and web pages would likely need to be designed for campaigns.

My name is Kaushik Tota, and I am a freshman at Saint Francis High School. I have lived in Sunnyvale for the last 11 years. I am very interested in environmental engineering, and I am a huge proponent of alternative energy. I have done research on metal-air fuel cells, and have developed a portable, inexpensive, and reusable magnesium-air fuel cell that has received numerous awards and recognition from the city of Sunnyvale.
