Tell us more about your climate strategy or solution (500 words)

Requiring business parks and corporations to use part of their own space for employee housing provides a systematic way to balance new jobs & housing. There can also be efficient and more cost-effective new infrastructure support for housing integrated into job centers. A campus-wide microgrid system can be put in place. Energy can be used more efficiently. For example, hot water from cooling data centers can be used for heating water for domestic use or for district space heating. Sprawl of higher density housing in residential neighborhoods, as some envision, may entail upgrading infrastructure in an ill-planned and costly way. For example, I was surprised that the addition of just one more house in my neighborhood required a bigger transformer on a new power pole.
Job/housing centers should have daycare centers, pre-schools, and provide shuttles to take children to schools outside the campuses.

Describe how your solution could be a game-changer for your selected Opportunity Area (100 words)

Corporations should be part of the solutions to problems they create in housing and commuting. They should not continue to externalize the cost of their operations to the rest of the community.
Besides addressing problems stated above, integrated housing provided by employers may even promote employee loyalty.

Explain how your idea would be implemented in Sunnyvale (700 words)

The idea needs a change in policy and general plan.

What kind of impact will your idea have? (250 words)

I hope this would mitigate the negative impacts of tech companies on residents, especially long-time residents, who are left behind in the boom of tech jobs.
