How are you connected to Sunnyvale?

  • I live in Sunnyvale.
  • I own a business in Sunnyvale.
  • I work in Sunnyvale.

What type of applicant are you?

  • For-profit

Stage of Development.

  • Idea with active ongoing efforts (ready to be scaled for Sunnyvale)

What problem are you aiming to solve? (100 words)

Homeowners are faced with rising gas and electric bills. YellowTin helps them mitigate this cost by enabling their transition to clean & complete electrification with personalized recommendations.

Tell us more about your climate strategy or solution (500 words)

Our solution is a web platform that educates and empowers homeowners of sunnyvale to make informed decisions towards clean electrification by analyzing their energy data. We provide a comprehensive summary along with personalized recommendations to take action. We cover 3 out of 4 Opportunity Areas -> Energy, Mobility, Data & Technology and integrate all of these comprehensively. When the homeowner logs in, they can view their current energy profile and can understand the benefit for each of the clean energy choices we recommend from a financial and CO2 standpoint. Our core focus towards clean electrification is through the below range of solutions: - Solar - Electric Vehicle - Battery Storage - Heat Pump Water & Space Heater (Switching from Natural Gas to efficient Electric appliances drastically reduces Green House Gas emissions) Our summary will include: - Financials associated with any solutions including Federal, State and City level rebates and incentives - Detailed technology choices along with pros and cons - Current vs. Future electricity & gas bills if one or more recommendations were implemented - Ability to connect to vendors - Ability for the homeowner to be in control of the buying journey by determining when it is ok for the vendors to reach out to him or her directly - System optimization: Optimal system needed based on home owner's current and future energy needs.

Describe how your solution could be a game-changer for your selected Opportunity Area (100 words)

Our solution will increase the REP (renewable energy portfolio) and lower GHG emissions at the residential level leading to a very high penetration of renewables. This would reduce the need for centralized energy generation and transportation leading to increased efficiency for the city, state and the US. This would also mean, the utilities could either get away or defer any capex associated with aging grid infrastructure.

Explain how your idea would be implemented in Sunnyvale (700 words)

Our solution is a means for Sunnyvale citizens to make the right decisions confidently and this could be implemented in one of the two ways: 1) City of Sunnyvale: There are couple of ways to implement: a) Our solution can be white labelled where the Sustainability manager as part of their marketing initiatives pushes the link for homeowners to begin their electrification journey. Some key means for marketing the solution: - Digital marketing would be a very important means and using platforms such as Nextdoor, facebook, etc will drive home owner uptick and engagement. - Homeowner brown bag sessions. - High schools: Engagement of students who drive the engagement on the platform with their parents fostering education, engagement, review and decision. b) A link to the YellowTin platform without a white label could be achieved as well, that again can be marketed and pushed to homeowners in similar means explained above. c) Pushed through the private sector to the home owner employees The option to have vendors on the platform is something that the City can determine, based on what would best fit their policy. The solution can be easily configured for either of the options. 2) Community Clean Energy (CCE): CCE and YellowTin share the same vision, Acceleration of Clean Electrification. Our solution can be white labelled and rolled out to the residents. Our goal is bundling of the range of solutions explained earlier and in the process of installing any of these, there is a decent percentage of homes that will need a main service panel upgrade. The average cost to upgrade the panel is $3000, and this is something the City of Sunnyvale or the CCE may want to look at to create rebate programs to remove any barriers towards clean electrification.

What kind of impact will your idea have? (250 words)

As part of the CAP 2.0, City of Sunnyvale's goal is to reduce GHG by 15% below baseline level (equivalent to 1990 levels) by 2020, 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. Our platform will accelerate city of Sunnyvale's CAP goals to be implemented and achieve success. Switching all appliances that uses gas to electricity reduces on an average about 6500 lbs/year of GHG for each home. With about 21.5K single family homes in Sunnyvale, our solution will aim to lower ~140 Million lbs of GHG emissions. We plan to approach townhomes and multi family house as well, which will have a larger GHG reduction impact on the city.

Scale: Describe how your idea could reach a significant number of people affected. (250 words)
