What specific problem(s) are you trying to address?

Teheca seeks to solve the problem of limited health care workforce in Ugandan health centers and limited access to youth friendly Sexual Reproductive health services in the country. A high number of girls are forced into unwanted sex or marriage, which puts them at high risk of unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV. Boys in adolescent stage are at risk, as well, which has greatly exposed the youth to potential risk of acquiring HIV. In disaster prone areas , it gets extra difficult for these youth to access the necessary tools to help protect themselves let alone information that would help them understand the problems they are facing and help equip them with solutions and guidance.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the problem(s) you are working to address?

What if there was away the youth in disaster strikes/prone areas can easily access the information, tools and pharmaceuticals they need to best arm them against the likely of unwanted abortion and acquiring HIV.? Are we doing enough to ensure that every young person gets access to information and tools to be equip them leave a safe, secure, confident and HIV free life? How well can we work with the health workers refugees within Displaced peoples camps to provide health care services.

Explain Your Idea

Teheca app.(Uberizing health care in Uganda) Creating an alternative source of timely health care workforce by providing easy access to caring and qualified health care workers for young people via a mobile phone platform hence empowering alternative distribution channels. Through the app, health workers in given areas can sign up on the platform, after validation, Teheca team makes them accessible via SMS and smart phone app, For any person with in a give area radius seeking to access information about SRH or needs SRH pharmaceuticals like condoms, emergency contraceptives or Family planning, they can easily locate these qualified individuals within the area to provide either free or paid for services and tools. A girl in need of emergency contraceptive will need to send and SMS to our platform, with information about there location and our system shall reply with the contact and address of a health workers closest to her, that she can reach out to for not only the pill but also counseling and guidance if need be. For one with a smartphone when in need, they open the Teheca app on their phone and the app will determine their location and show a map of health workers that are available within her area and she go review the profiles, include profile picture and select on that they feel best suites their needs, send a request and they our team will ensure that they health worker finds the requester or vice verser depending on the best case solution for the two.

Name the three most important ways that your idea will address your identified problem(s).

Youth need access to friendly sexual reproductive services and among these is an element to being discrete when accessing services like circumcision, emergency contraceptive, condoms, HIV, testing and counseling, our solution creates this much needed discreteness by creating a one to one connection to qualified health care personnel closest to the person. By recruiting health workers within the communities we are ensuring timely access for the community members whenever in need, its said a stitch in time saves nine. By enabling access to timely health care we are ensuring every girl/woman in the community can be saved from unwanted pregnancy and HIV contracting. Creating the much needed employment for the girl child in the community.

How is your idea unique?

Today in Uganda, to access health care services you have two major options, private or public hospitals, these places do not provide youth friendly sexual Reproductive services, it becomes worse in conflict areas, refugee camps and disaster areas these facilities may not exist readily and of they do they time taken to access the service is to much due to the high patient to nurse ratio Teheca app solution is the first of a kind in the country that enables an individual to seek for services from qualified personnel. Our solution provides personalised, timely and discrete services to those indeed. Sexual reproductive health is that one field that one seeking the services may shy away and if not reached out to in time could end up in unwanted situation

What are some outstanding concerns or questions that you have regarding your idea?

We are currently working on creating awareness about the existence of services, and ensuring that we have a steady supply of qualified health care workers on the platform that are ready to respond to user requests when they come in. There more people in need than supply of health workers, how can we increase supply as demand grows so that every request is serviced timely and accurately as well as given the attention it deserves

Who are your end users?

We have two main end users, the girls/women and health worker. Teheca is targeting health workers and youth in different communities that need access to timely and friendly Sexual Reproductive Health Services. Communities in Uganda have nurses both active and retired that are willing to extend services of the limited health facilities to their respective areas and to their people. By empowering the qualified health workers through training and upscaling we can have an alternative distribution channel of SRH services and contraceptives for girls in the communities that are faced with disasters this way we able to ensure that young girls can avoid unwanted pregnancies, have access to SRH information and hence prevent contracting HIV

Where will your idea be implemented?

  • Kenya
  • Uganda

What is the primary type of emergency setting where your innovation would operate?

  • Prolonged displacement
  • Community at risk of disaster

Tell us more about the emergency setting that you intend to implement in

We seek to implement our solution in Northern Uganda, an area that has suffered a prolonged conflict and has many displaced peoples camps which have a high number of people living there. During the war many health centres were destroyed and hence the dire need for health care services for people within the different communities. Recruiting and on boarding the existing health workers that are not currently working in the few health centres allows us to extend the much need SRH to the people.

What is your organization's name?

Teheca Limited

Tell us more about you.

Teheca is a social enterprise that was founded by 2 Ugandan Youth, Namugambe Asha a business administration graduate and Ruyonga Daniel a computer science graduate both from Makerere University, The two founders work in the organisation to see that the company grows and serves the Uganda community. The team has since grown to 6 members, including 1 Public Health Officer, 1 Business Development admin as well 2 part time developers that work on Teheca platform. After a series of iteration of business idea that originally started as just a patient care company and getting support from an acceleration program under UNFPA, we believe that we have both the time, skill and knowledge together with our partners to implement this solution.

Organizational Characteristics

  • Indigenous-led organization
  • Youth-led organization

What is the current scale of your proposed innovation?

  • Regional - within countries in 1 geographic region

Experience in Implementation Country(ies)

  • Yes, for less than one year.

Expertise in Sector

  • Yes, for more than a year.

Organization Location

Kampala, Uganda

What is your organizational status?

  • Registered for-profit company, including social enterprises.

What is the maturity of your innovation?

  • Existing Prototype or Pilot: Tested a part of my solution with users and am iterating.

How has your idea changed based on feedback?

From the talking to health workers and users, the team has opted to include health workers that are currently running private clinics as places where the youth can find the services they seek, this will allows to provide much more options to the girls and women seeking sexual reproductive health services, this also helps answer one of major challenge to ensuring supply of health workers as demand grows. There is a high use of low end phones than smart phones in our target pilot areas, and because of this the team shall put higher focus the SMS platform so as to cater for the low end devices and the smartphone app will come along as well.

Who will implement this idea?

Teheca team of 4 full time members including the co-founders will devote the time to execute the idea to reality. we shall seek external part time developers to increase output time as well as move to the impact areas to pilot, recruit and execute the solution. Teheca team currently is located in Kampala and work full time at the organisation.

Using a human-centered design approach, you may uncover insights that lead to small or foundational changes to your organization’s existing strategy or processes in order to unlock the potential of your idea. How would your organization go about making such changes?

The big decision are made as a team for most of the times, when every one is in agreement on a course of action to be taken then we move to make execution plans and select a lead and from time to time, the C.E.O gets to make the final decision depending on the requirement and implication of the action to be taken. Team based decision help us in smooth execution of the process and tasks as each and every member agrees to wards them. For every tasks there is a lead who is responsible to ensure successfully execution and this is facilitated by use of work plans and online tools like Trello for task tracking and reporting.

What challenges do your end-users face? (1) What is the biggest challenge that your end-users face on a day-to-day, individual level? (2) What is the biggest systems-level challenge that affects your end-users?

For a youth in need of accessing youth friendly sexual reproductive health services, they have to deal with one queues in public health centres thats for those areas that centres dedicated SRH this on top of not getting enough time with the specialist to fully understand the options available to her/him as well as consequences, this leads to misinformation and most times staying away from accessing these services, let alone the stigma associated with these services, from condom usage, contraceptive to receiving HIV treatment. For the user who has an opportunity to receive services may not have the option of steady supply due to stock outs due to an un efficient distributional model and channel of sexual reproductive health pharmaceuticals in health care system.

Tell us about your vision for this project: (1) share one sentence about the impact you would like to see from this project in five years and (2) what is the biggest question you need to answer to get there?

By 2022, we aim to have signed up over 700 healthcare workers and having provided access to SRH services to over 1.5million girls & women by continuous up skilling of health workers and leveraging partnerships with organisations involved in the distribution and supply of reproductive health commodities in Uganda. How do increase demand of SRH services by girls and women in Uganda through Teheca platform so as to grow the number of health workers on the platform as well as keep them engaged

What is it that most attracted you to Amplify instead of a more traditional funding model?

Health innovation are not a get a quick pay check kind, Teheca as a social enterprise is aimed at creating an income by creating a solution for a bigger population, traditional funding wouldn't not allow us pursue this angle. A traditional funding model for example seek an investor would mean us working towards ensuring the investor gets back is money but this may not necessarily lead to us efficiently and effectively using Teheca platform to provide solution in sexual reproductive health.

Do you intend to implement your Amplify idea in refugee camps / temporary settlements?

  • We aim to implement our Amplify idea in support of displaced populations, but not in a refugee camp / temporary settlement.

How long have you and your colleagues been working on this idea together?
