What specific problem(s) are you trying to address?

Focus on Vulnerable Children
 VC are among those most severely affected by AIDS and most neglected in AIDS programming
 Investing in VC is investing in the future strength and security of communities and countries
 Care for VC is a powerful common ground for initiating AIDS responses in communities
They include, but are not limited to:
 Children affected by HIV or other chronic illnesses
 Children in need of alternative family care
 Children who are abused or neglected
 Children in ‘hard-to-reach’ areas
 Disability related vulnerability
 Children affected by armed conflict
 Children in need of legal protection
Indications of Vulnerability
 Inadequate access to educational, health and other social support

Explain Your Idea

The key problems faced by OVC in the state and in particular Akpabuyo LGA are listed as follows:
 Lack of funds to access quality education and provision of basic school needs.
 Malnutrition because of food insecurity.
 Lack of access to quality health care.
 Low socio-economic status of the caregivers.
 None or low empowerment for older OVCs.
Age Care Foundation hopes to place the most in need vulnerable children in Ten (10) communities in the following LGA of Calabar Municipal, Calabar South, Odukpani, Akamkpa Akpabuyo and Bakassi LGAs in schools (Primary and secondary). On the area of food insecurity, it hopes to train caregivers on homestead farming in order to ensure affordable sustainable basic food through the use and sale of produce from the farm as well as train the caregivers on micro-enterprise fundamentals on the running of small scale businesses.
It equally plans to network with other CBOs and LGA’s Desk Officers in core thematic areas concerned with OVC programming to ensure proper co-ordination and monitoring for effective and efficient use of resources. Our organization is already networking with other CSOs on Project where OVC programming is our core priority. All the enrolled OVC and their caregivers will be provided with; HIV testing and counselling services, as well as screened for TB and linked for care promptly as appropriate. At each stage, the community stakeholders will be carried along to ensure a conducive and enabling environment.

Name the three most important ways that your idea will address your identified problem(s).

In line with the Global Plan to eliminate Mother to Child Transmission (eMTCT), SUSTAIN has a strong focus on preventing of new infections in women of childbearing age, creating demand for uptake of antenatal care, and providing access to prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) services for pregnant mothers.

Hi Age Care Foundation team, nice to have you in the Challenge! It sounds like you are doing some great holistic work to care for the needs of your community through providing food security and some health services. Would love to understand on a deeper level what these programs look like especially with regards to reproductive and sexual health. Would also love to learn a little bit more about the 1000 Orphans and 250 Caregivers you plan to reach with this program.

Looking forward to learning more!
