What specific problem(s) are you trying to address?

Adolescent pregnancy in Kenya is a catastrophe that has led to serious problems that we seek to solve. The problems are ; Infant& maternal mortality since most of adolescents hide their pregnancies because of fear of stigma & discrimination and fail to attend prenatal care which exposes them to health complications during & after the pregnancy. Some adolescents cannot afford to access prenatal care & that leaves them with options of home delivery which is dangerous to the mother and child. School drop out by the pregnant adolescent ,STI &HIV/AIDS infection because of lack of sex education, Stigma & discrimination against them, Unsafe abortions as a way of cleaning the mess ,early marriages, repeat birth & drug and substance abuse .

What are some of your unanswered questions about the problem(s) you are working to address?

Our biggest challenge is that Some of the pregnancies are as a result of rape from close family members and the adolescent is afraid to report the offender for the fear of been thrown out of home & that is a tough situation for us that we are still figuring out on how to solve because the offender may attempt the crime again & even infect the adolescent with STI or HIV/AIDS and yet the victim cannot come out & report him.

Explain Your Idea

Our idea is introducing & implementing mentorship programs that target specifically the pregnant adolescents & adolescent mothers. As an organization, we already have in place the mentorship programs targeting these adolescents and hope to begin soon & we believe that the implementation will produce positive results and help solve part of the problems that arise from adolescent pregnancy. One of the program is; Pregnant Adolescent Program which emphasizes on the health aspect of the mother and baby during pregnancy (pre- natal care). The organization together with medical personnel (volunteers) will visit them once a month to find out about the progress of the pregnancy, provide the required medication& even educate them on reproductive health. This program aims at reducing infant and maternal mortality. Adolescent Mother Program is the other , its a six week program that will equip them with necessary skills. upon completion, they will graduate & receive certificates and a follow up will be done to measure the impact of the mentorship in their lives. We also have already identified a good number of adolescent mothers who after an interaction with them pointed out that some of the challenges they were facing include; lack of parenting skills, discrimination, rejection and stress as a result of early motherhood among others. These challenges were the basis of the formulation of all our mentorship curriculum for the four target groups

Name the three most important ways that your idea will address your identified problem(s).

Our idea will do three things namely; 1. provide a support system for the users, every human being needs a friend. We will create a friendly environment for them all, each user will be able to have someone to talk & share with the challenges they are going through in life& this will boost their social life & self-esteem. 2. Impart the users with the necessary life skills, our users require different skills in the different stages of life they are in. We have a pool of experienced professionals who will equip each user with the life skills they are supposed to learn that will help them realize their full potential in life 3. provide the important information they each need to know in the different stages of life they are in.

How is your idea unique?

Unlike other initiatives that might be focusing on some aspects of the teenage mothers, our initiative will focus on both adolescent mothers & fathers and also on all the aspects of their lives. We will handle the emotional, psychological, social, physical, spiritual, academic & economical aspects which will cause them to dream and shine/ excel once more. The initiative will enable them bounce back & fight poverty hence becoming successful in life. Most of the tutors that will aid in running the mentorship program have experience in youth mentorship & that places us in a better position of having a good rapport with the target group. We are a team driven by passion, handwork & determination. We are working in partnership with the government through the community's Deputy County Commissioner .We intend to begin with a region called Waldai Location in Kericho County in Kenya. We will be the first organization to launch a mentorship program for the pregnant adolescent & mothers)

What are some outstanding concerns or questions that you have regarding your idea?

None completion of the program by the pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers. Some might drop out of the program. A possibility of attack from the men responsible for the pregnancies, some might be interested in marrying the adolescents who after attending our program might decide to continue with schooling rather than getting married. An attack from the parents of the pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers who might be planning to marry off the adolescent mothers .

Who are your end users?

The direct beneficiaries of our programs include: Pregnant adolescents aged 10-19 years, Adolescent mothers/ Fathers aged 10-19 years and Children belonging to the adolescent mothers. Our end users reside in Kenya a place called Kericho. We are targeting to begin with 30. The users will benefit from our support system, they will be imparted with necessary skills of life & they will also be equipped with all the relevant information they need to know at different stages of life.

Where will your idea be implemented?

  • Kenya

What is the primary type of emergency setting where your innovation would operate?

  • Community at risk of disaster

Tell us more about the emergency setting that you intend to implement in

Adolescent pregnancy in our country Kenya is a disaster that has killed the dreams of thousands of adolescent girls & that opens up the opportunity of poverty in the nation. The risks include none completion of the mentorship program by the users, the users might be married off at early ages while some may drop out of the once a month pregnant adolescent program exposing them to great risks. A possibility of attack from the men responsible for the pregnancies, some might want to marry them.
