Safegrounds

I aim to create community adolescent clubs, as means to both attract and engage adolescents and thereafter introduce such education to them.

What specific problem(s) are you trying to address?

The main challenges I seek to address is the stigma that the adolescence face when they attempt to access services. Therefore, through the means of a establishing community adolescent clubs, like the Boys and Girls Club here in the United States, we might be able to attract the youth to congregate. Once they see the clubs as safe, social grounds for communication and recreational activities with others around their age, they will much more relaxed and opened to learn about sexual education. As rapport is established between instructors and the youth, instructors might then endeavor to lend confidential services to those in need of it.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the problem(s) you are working to address?

Are some of these youth who have suffered through crisis prone to be diagnosed with PTSD? As this might strongly prevent them from seeking outside help. What are some of the cultural practices in their communities which enlivens and prolong the crisis youth in the communities endure?

Explain Your Idea

`My idea hinges on establishing the likes of Boys and Girls club in such afflicted communities. I believe that creating recreational spaces will give the youth environments to be less tensed about their affliction and be less burden, thus creating something similar a judgement and harassment-free zone. If the youth believe that they are on safegrounds, then that opens gateways for rapports to be established between the youth and those willing to help them. Also, by creating a social setting geared towards the youth, it might attract other youths to join as well. Therefore, minimizing the stigma which rises when a distressed youth seeks for help.

Name the three most important ways that your idea will address your identified problem(s).

1) A safe space will be provided in which helpers can build rapport with afflicted youth 2)A social setting setting which draws some quantity of youth can easily boost morale amongst troubled youth, increasing their confidence and assertiveness. 3)A recreational space can be effective in implementing activities enjoyed by the youth, while simultaneously providing them with the proper education without alarming them on self-defense 4)Providing a snack/food incentive for kids who are not fully nourished at home

How is your idea unique?

My idea is unique because it serves as a practical, perpetual solution. Many of the youth who go through such crisis live in communities which does not consistently put their needs first. However, establishing a community recreational club can be a prominent step in showing both the youth and the rest of the community that the needs of the youth should be paramount.

What are some outstanding concerns or questions that you have regarding your idea?

I do not know how the parents might respond to their kids spending time in leisure, especially when some of these parents rely on their children to work to support the family.

Who are your end users?

My end users are adolescents from the age to 10 to 18. They live somewhere in west Africa within small communities. If my idea proves practical and successful enough, my users will be endowed with the necessary knowledge and services to child abuse and manipulation. In addition to them waxing confident and apt apt in through my program, their aggregate communities and countries will benefit from a reduction in unplanned pregnancies which reinforces poverty, sexually transmitted diseases, and ignorance concerning topics on sex education.

Where will your idea be implemented?

  • Ghana
  • India
  • Sierra Leone

What is the primary type of emergency setting where your innovation would operate?

  • Community at risk of disaster

Tell us more about the emergency setting that you intend to implement in

My plan would be executed in cities where the number of teenage pregnancies are high and/ or where there are a high statistic of sexaully transmitted diseases. The risk involved is the possibility of low participation because of the stigma which would surface when the young girls become involved.

Sam,
This is probably one of the best foundations for a potentially successful project I've seen! I like the specificity of it and it seems very well thought out. Are there any other ways to get them to join the Boys and Girls Club? Also, maybe there should be a certification for the instructors to prevent any corrupt instructors. Overall a great idea that can be scalable!
