What specific problem(s) are you trying to address?

Access to family planning and contraception is a fundamental dimension of sexual and reproductive health and health rights. However, many Malawians are unable especially the adolescents to enjoy their rights. This in-turn have an unintended impact on the lives of women and girls who cannot fulfill their right to education, health and employment due to several challenges such as:Lack of confidentiality by health providers and privacy. Provider biases, where Providers who believe that contraceptive have a negative impact to adolescents such as inhibiting future fertility may refuse to serve young people, or they may restrict access to certain contraceptive methods.Few contraceptive options. Lack of online youth friendly service link.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the problem(s) you are working to address?

• There is lack of information and knowledge among adolescents about Family Planning methods
• Lack of confidentiality and privacy
• Few contraceptive options
• Financial barriers
• Legal and policy barriers
• Gender norms
• Lack of youth friendly approach on family planning service delivery
• Lack of involvements of youth in implementing family planning projects

Explain Your Idea

PMHA understands that addressing Family Planning needs among girls and women is a vital intervention, through formulations of groups, in these groups girls can access FP services freely, they can share experience to motivate others and online platform, currently there is lack of a girls SRH health hub to act as portal for online counseling and accessing updated information.

Name the three most important ways that your idea will address your identified problem(s).

•90% of adolescents will have accurate information on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights as well as Family planning services. Youths will have be able to make their own fertility choices after having information on their reproductive health and have access to different methods of modern family planning methods
• Youth clubs will be established where the adolescents will be empowered with sexual reproductive issues and rights which will help them to make informed choices. Role models will also be motivating the adolescents to encourage them to use FP so as to achieve their goals.
•Health providers will adopt new friendly approach in service delivery such as online counselling

How is your idea unique?

This idea has a component of youth friendly health service delivery, since There is also a remarkably high unmet need for contraceptive use among adolescents as in 31% of male and 15% of female adolescents use modern contraceptives methods.

What are some outstanding concerns or questions that you have regarding your idea?

if there is no immediate action early pregnancies will continue to increase leading to high school drop outs rates and over population.

Who are your end users?

Addressing the issue now will help in reducing the number of teenage pregnancies among girls . This will also help the girls to continue with their education as to be productive citizens of the country. Since there is too much congestion of public resources due to over population which results from poor or no utilization of Family planning among the youths, addressing the problem will help to reduce the population and strain on the available resources. This will also help in achieving the Government of Malawi’s plan of improving the quality of life of its people through promotion and practice of family planning (FP).

Hi Levison, thanks for contributing to the Challenge! A couple of questions, it sounds like you are proposing a very holistic plan that includes education awareness, health worker training, and community/parent support and youth leadership? This is very ambitious, is this work you are already doing, if so which parts are you already doing and which parts would be new? If all of this work would be new work for your organization where would you plan to start?

Second, I clicked on your website and it takes me to a site called Lilongwe Water Board, is this your correct website or is it something different?

Looking forward to learning more about the work you are doing!

1- Looking at challenges faced by girls and women mainly are around those areas in Malawi:
- Lack of knowledge about Sexual reproductive health(SRH) that is why education awareness on SRH among girls and women is comes in addressing this issue.
-Health provider bias on family planning services delivery due to a belief that Family planning has a negative effect on girls and women that is why Health provider training is important in addressing this problem.
-Another challenge is lack of financial sustainability where young girls fail to access other family planning methods at a small cost and for transportation that is why girl empowerment is helping to address this problem.
2- This work is new to our organization, we have just identified these problems and we are planning to start on 1 October as soon as we find funds
3-Sorry i made a mistake on our website the correct is
Thank you so much for this comment

Levison this is such a powerful idea.
I love the idea of the youth club best of all. I e read research that suggests Child-orientated environmental education influences adult knowledge and household behaviour. It seems that If you were able to get the youth club going it would have far reaching positive influence on the wider community.
good luck
