What specific problem(s) are you trying to address?

Girls are educationally marginalized due to factors attributing to cultural as well as attitudinal issues. The cultural factors are those that diminish girl’s initiation of getting into school environments. This setback independently bears the major share in the negative attributes list. Attitudinal challenges are those embodied upon by teachers towards girls who are pregnant, contravened HIV/AIDS or the disabled. Thus, the absence of girl sensitive teachers and school environments play a great role in the marginalization process of girls’ access to education.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the problem(s) you are working to address?

1. How to effectively prevent early adolescent girls pregnancy and keep girls in school?
2. How to improve the perception/attitude of the society towards pregnant adolescent and adolescent girls living with HIV/AIDS

Explain Your Idea

The imposition of participatory research that takes into consideration the views, opinions and concerns of the potential school-dropouts and anyone else whose opinion matters is the first step for the communities’ transformation process. Additionally the preparation of one intervention package addressing root causes for school dropout of adolescent girls on the modalities of training and other resource materials, and methodologies to work with parents, educators and governmental officers will transform the health problem since its prepared based on inputs of adolescents, their parents, educators and other stakeholders who might influence adolescent girls’ chances to graduate from school.

Name the three most important ways that your idea will address your identified problem(s).

1. Undertaking discussion forums with adolescent boys, girls and child led groups.
2. Undertaking consultative workshops with teachers, parents and other stakeholders
3. Conducting public campaign, events and other activities to raise awareness of the general public.

How is your idea unique?

First this project will be implemented on the hard to reach area/part of Ethiopia. For this specific project I have picked Gambela, this time I am convinced to involve the private sector to play a role being part of the solution.
Component: Promoting the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
The neglected but the untapped resource center in today’s Ethiopia is the private sector. Its huge influence in the economy has created certain setbacks to withhold the sector to play its role in societal issues. The establishment of industrial parks across cities of Ethiopia, at this instance will add value in the country’s endeavor for health service development.
Objective: To address the private sector at Gambela Regional state in order to build a collaborative working partnerships between the private sector, civil society organizations and the government to carry out a coordinated set of interventions to prevent the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Gambela Regional state.

What are some outstanding concerns or questions that you have regarding your idea?

With regard to HIV/AIDS knowledge, Gambela regional state is among the low list from the rest regional states. One of the major issues is the high risk of girls (10-24), women and disabled persons being infected with HIV/AIDS. This problem is caused by low awareness among the groups, and the discrimination they face from community members that hinder them from attaining higher levels of education and equal opportunities to health services.

Who are your end users?

The end users of this project mainly will be the adolescent girls and boys. However, different child led groups, girls clubs and women will be also the beneficiaries of this project.

Where will your idea be implemented?

  • Ethiopia

What is the primary type of emergency setting where your innovation would operate?

  • Epidemic

Tell us more about the emergency setting that you intend to implement in

Ethiopia is one of the most seriously affected countries in the world by HIV/AIDS. While this ratio show the overall situation of the country, Gambella regional state leads the rest regional states of the country. Different factors interact in complex manner to acquire and spread of HIV infection in the region. Nonetheless the epidemic is too high in Anuak zone of the region. There are six woredas in Anuak zone. They are Abobo, Dimma, Gambela, Gambela zuria, Gog and Jor.

What exactly is the subject or title of your research? Is it the attitude of teachers towards pregnant school girls? Is it the causes of the high rate of school drop outs among adolescents girls and boys? Is it finding a solution for the high HIV/AIDS prevalence among adolescents in Gambela region? Is it a survey or a qualitative research on gathering different stakeholders to find a solution for teen pregnancy or school drop outs?

Thanks for your interest and question. The title/subject at this moment is "Promoting sexual and reproductive heath via girls education." The focus will be preventing adolescent pregnancy and school drop out in relation to pregnancy. at the stage of adolescent both boys and girls need guidance/education regarding reproductive health care and more. I hope this will contribute to prevent HIV/AIDS. All this activities need the participation of different stakeholders.
