What specific problem(s) are you trying to address?

women with disabilities in particular, are often viewed as asexual, incapable of engaging in a sexual relationship, and unable to bear and raise children, which severely limits the information and types of reproductive health services made available to them. They face prejudice, stigma and double discrimination” in their daily lives. Due to this reasons, the situation is now becoming a disastor as far as the group is concerned, there are many disability women with HIV virus in their blood, there are not few who are being raped and contracted HIV/STD/FISTULA, being pushed to begging on the streets due to unwanted preganacy and gave birth, if lucky. There are some who commit suicide due to being pregnan tdead due to poor (no) prenantal service

What are some of your unanswered questions about the problem(s) you are working to address?

We are thinking about the type of training module that can optimally impact the deep rooted perception of Iddir’ leaders and their members with in short period of time. . Social accountability is also an emerging concept in our community so how can we practically in place score cards/ follow up, measuring and corrective mechanisms, once we empower them, is also a question in this project.

Explain Your Idea

Ethiopian community is traditionally organized at the village level in the form of social institution called ‘Iddir’ that originally dealt with funeral and nowdays, most of them have undergone a reform so that they are now rapidly taking critical postion within the society interms of social interactions , social coherence and solidarity. The typical features/opprtunities of these institutions are first Iddir is comprised of the majority local residents who have different background interms of age, sex, profession, health condition, religion and other factors. It helps to easily dissiminate the practice For example, imparted health professional who is member of the Iddir will take that particular knowledge, skill and attitude to the health setting and like wise the teacher to school setting, religious personnel to church and mosque setting Second, Iddir’s in general are much respected and infulential institutions of the community Third, Iddirs traditionally are semi-formal insititutons with both formal and informal types of communication and structure that widen the level and type of engagement upon the issue. The last but not the least is families of the disabilities and very few disabilities are members of IddirsThe project will have three developmental phasses such as first empowering the leaders of the iddirs, then arranging discussion forums among the Iddir members finally the project will organize consultation meeting between disability association members.

Name the three most important ways that your idea will address your identified problem(s).

1. Changing the old perception of Iddir leaders in the community. Here the key point, after the training these leaders should essentially be activists/advocators, educators and visible models among the community as far as the issue of SRH/disability concerned. through ,KYRHDO/EWDNA will prepare training manual on SRH/DISABILITY with the contents include disability and gender based violence, disability and reproductive health carrier (relatioship, marriage, family planning use, pregenecy, child birth and nurturing),disability and reproductive health 2. Organizing community forum to be led by changed leaders of their own Iddirs 3. Organizing consultation meeting of the community Iddir members and Women with disability living in the same area

How is your idea unique?

The first uniqueness of this idea is it gives the chance for two organizations which have different experience, specialty and constituency to work together, KYRHDO and EWDNA. The former has been working on community based SRH activities for the last fifteen years and the later is an organization working and completely committed for women with disability. Uniqueness in this project is it will facilitate consultation meetings between the communities (members of the Iddir’) and disable women not only to discuss on the action plan but also help to prepare fertile grounds to accountability. This will help the two bodies; Iddirs’ and Women with disabilities’. That means practically, these community institutions will revise their by laws from this perspective and include some amendments on the topic of memebership of disabilities, participation of disabilities in the Iddir’s , how to facilitate friendly environment for disabilities particulaarly SRH-ISSUES for women with disability.

What are some outstanding concerns or questions that you have regarding your idea?

The most outstanding and concerning parts of this project are first, developing very rigorous training manual/handbook for Iddir leaders about SRH/disability the second one is organizing very successful consultation meeting between the community members and Women with disability.

Who are your end users?

Our end users are women with disability age between 15-29,lives in one sub city of Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia. There number is 1200+ and their families.Through this project,They entertain very supportive, responsible community and environment so that they can easily get information and service about SRH. Along with this, the project impact the knowledge, attitude and behavior of ten Iddir' members and their family which is approximately 25,000 about disability and SRH.

Where will your idea be implemented?

  • Ethiopia

How has your idea changed based on feedback?

The feed back has contributed on refinment of each phases of the project idea. That is how to develop mannual, the contents and the training modalities, what should be the end result of consultation in relation with social accountability of Iddirs, what should be the part of the members of the association.I doesnot bring basic change yet passed through impressive refinment.

Who will implement this idea?

Using a human-centered design approach, you may uncover insights that lead to small or foundational changes to your organization’s existing strategy or processes in order to unlock the potential of your idea. How would your organization go about making such changes?

KYRHDO and EWDNA have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on disability SRH issues. This would help to harness the experiences and specialty of the two organizations for one common goal. KYRHDO as lead applicant is responsible to coordinate the project implementation and oversee funding issues. The team will be formed from the two organizations that routinely plan, implement, monitor and report the status of the project both the activity and financial aspect. Major operational modifications are presented to the Board of Directors for feedback and approval prior to implementation. This regular communication and openness to change has allowed our work to stay modern, refined and locally-led.

What challenges do your end-users face? (1) What is the biggest challenge that your end-users face on a day-to-day, individual level? (2) What is the biggest systems-level challenge that affects your end-users?

1) The most individual challenges reported by disabled women during feedback phase include the lack of information on their rights, lack of self-esteem and poverty that lead to violence disabled women are facing in their community. (2) The biggest systems- level challenges are the blind gender laws and policies on disabled women issues as well the lack of representation of disabled women in decision making structure as a particular group of women with particular issues

Tell us about your vision for this project: (1) share one sentence about the impact you would like to see from this project in five years and (2) what is the biggest question you need to answer to get there?

To see all women with disability to ENJOY thier natural gift SRH.

What is it that most attracted you to Amplify instead of a more traditional funding model?
